There is much in dignation among the people in that part ot California and Oregon, and needed measures should be t;'keu to stop the lawless acts ami to have a Ushway constructed that will al low the millions of salmon to go up this important river, as Miis is the season that they must go up to de posit the spawn. Secretary Miller, writim: from Jacksonville, says of the prospects : Our district fair promises to be a great success not only in point of numbers, but. in the excellence of the horticultural and stock ex hibits. The fame of Southern Oregon has already gone abroad as to its wonderful fruit yield, but it is not generally known that it yields the palm to none in blooded stock. But a few yeat'M since the horses of Southern" Oregon had a coast reputation. Recent sales notably that of McDonough & Swan wo h rsca to J'a or Van J)e Lashmutt for $1000 prove that the old Vermont stock is still in the ri.ig. As for blooded cattle, almost everv kind is owned. Our distrii-t ! fair will resemble former state fairs 1 in that many who have never seen o ! a fair will come and eamn dnrirxr foil 50 the week. Noihing since the gold 25 excitement of the fifties and the 73 : building of the railroad has occur "5 i red to draw such crowds. In fact. the largest crowd ever assembled in Southern Oregon will be at the fair near Central Point, between I .Monday the 2.!d and Kriihiv tl.o 27th. Ckawfordsvili.e, Sept. 23. In these days of timber grabbing and the operations of timber sharp ers it is refreshing to see some of the vast wealth of timber of th'a region tailing into hands, whereby it will be converted into lumber in an honest and legitimate manner. This is just now being done here. About 250,000.000 feet of lumber has been located on the Calapooia near here during the past eix months. This has been done bv actual settlers. A Michigan com pany with a capital stock of sever al million dollars are arranging to start a big saw-mill here in the near future. They propose to im prove the river, and, it is said, will make an effort to have a branch railway from Albany to this timber belt, which contains some of the most valuable timber on the coast. Mr. J. H Armstrong has been lamely instrumental in getting the timber opened up, and he has done so without any dissatisfaction whatever. The timber lands when secured are valued at $10.09 per acre, and the owneis say they are willing to pay taxes on au assess ment at that rate. It is quite certain that these mills will ultimately be built, and this movement pro ruses to add materially to the growth of this part of the country. WATERLOO! IMPORTANT TO TOURISTS.
