Klamath river at Manistee, Siski

ing notes from county correspond
ents on the Pacific coast are taken,
relative to the wheat crop: -
Oregon : Lane Got an early
growth before the drouth set in.
Union Prime condition; a little
light in weight. Summer fallow is
very high in yield 110; spring
fallow is 90, owing to the June
drouth. Gilliam Generally an en
ire failure. Linn Fall wheat
yielded better than was expected,
yet is spotted in some sections and
about an aveiagecrop. In other
localit'es it would market 105;
spring wheat is 80. Yamhill A
full average.
Washington : Columbia Not so
plump as usual San Juan Fall
wheat is a good crop ; spring wheat

California: Humboldt Much

will be well worth the hearing of

In these days of timber grabbing
and the operations of timber sharp
ers it is refreshing to see some of
the vast wealth of timber of th'a
region tailing into hands, whereby
it will be converted into lumber in
an honest and legitimate manner.
This is just now being done here.
About 250,000.000 feet of lumber
has been located on the Calapooia
near here during the past eix
months. This has been done bv
actual settlers. A Michigan com
pany with a capital stock of sever
al million dollars are arranging to
start a big saw-mill here in the
near future. They propose to im
prove the river, and, it is said, will
make an effort to have a branch
railway from Albany to this timber
belt, which contains some of the
most valuable timber on the coast.
Mr. J. H Armstrong has been
lamely instrumental in getting the
timber opened up, and he has
done so without any dissatisfaction
whatever. The timber lands when
secured are valued at $10.09 per
acre, and the owneis say they are
willing to pay taxes on au assess
ment at that rate.
It is quite certain that these
mills will ultimately be built, and
this movement pro ruses to add
materially to the growth of this
part of the country.
