The president did not get off to Deer Park until Saturday, owing to important matters demanding his attention here. Before goiny he tendered the appointment of com-misr-ioner of pensions to Major William Warner, of Missouri, ex corirressinari and ex-commander-in-chief of the (J. A. Ii. Major Warner is here but has not yet de cided ! to accept the position, and many' of his friends say that his accepfance'ia extremely doubtful, as he" cannot afford to give' up his present large incofrie from his legal practice for the salary ef commis sioner' of pensions, $4000 per annum.' However, great political pressure is being brought to bear upon him and he may be made to see that it is his duty to accept. I am in a position to state positively that whether Major Warner accepts or not the president has fully de cided that he will give the position to a representative member of the G. A. K., so that veterans may rest assured that their interests will be looked after. Although several days old the resignation of Commissioner Tan ner is still the all-absorbing topic of conversation. Mr. Tanner has been tendersd a U. S. niarshalship in New York, which he declined. It is thought that the president will appoint him recorder of deeds in this city, and that l.e will accepl the ap pointment, although some of his friends say that he will not again accept oilice under the present ad ministration. Secretary Nobie declines at pres ent to make pubhc either the re port of the commission which in vestigated the pension ofiice or his correspondence with Commissioner Tanner, but they are certain to be brought when congress meets, if not before, as a congressional in vestigation of the whole thing is now inevitable. And it is proba ble that the republicans will fore stall democratic action by them selves taking the iniatitory s-teps thereto. secretary Windom has given notice that he will receive no mure callers until his annual repoit is completed. Tom Roe, the chief of the Chicago bicycle tribe, arrived in the city last night and is now stopping at the Palace. He left Chicago last Mon day afternoon bv rail, but will return on his wheel He is to ride back in less tkan fifty-nine days, and if he succeeds in his task he will receive a handsome gold medal from the Chicago Herald. Immediately upoa his arrival in this city Roe was taken in tow by a number of local wheel men, who escorted bim through some of the principal parts of the city. In conversation with a reporter last night Soe stated that he will start for the East to-morrow, leaving the Palace Hotel at noon. It has been stipulated that he is to stop at every station along the railroad and tele graph to the Chicago Herald the num ber of miles the cyclometer attached to his wheel registers, his physical condition, and such eihei matters ap pertaining to his trip as will be in teresting to the public. The Santa Fe officials have taken a deep interest in his endeavors, and have instructed their agents along the entire system to afford him every facilty to make fast time. They have kindly placed their wires at his disposal, and for the benefit or the wheeimen that are itt:rested in Tom's effort to break the record of fifty-nine days, daily bulletins will be exhibited in various parts cf Chicago. Roe has studied tl.c territory through which he must past, and be lieves that he will be enabled to ride the distance in fifty days, barring any serious accident- To uo this he must average a triEe uvcr fifty milss a day. The distance over the rotate Roe has selected is 2573 miles. The route Stevens took when he made his record was through Southern Dakota, or what is known as the northern route, which ii nearly 300 miles shorter than that over which Roe will travel. Roe is a strong and abie-bodied fellow, wry determined, and a skillful r.s w;U as a rapid wheelman.
