Johu Snell, a colored convict from Multnomah county, this morning performed self-amputation of the third and middle finger of his left hand, lie did it to avoid work. He placed his ringers on a board, and with one stroke of a hatchet in his right hand severed the members. He is in for assault with a dangerous weapon, convicted from Portland, for five years, one of which he has served. He is a stout, hearty fel low and the only reason he did it was to avoid work. Geo. Barker, charged with hav ing robbed Samuel Stott, the Port land lawyer, was given prelimin ary examination to-day and bound over to appear before the grand jury. He gave no bail and was committed. Stott was present and identified him beyond a doubt. a J, C. Gross, of Portland, Or., was brought to the asylum to-day. He is about 32 years of age.
