In the invention and use of war implements this is exemplified perhaps better than in any ot ier avocation. An example of this counter work is found in a remarkable torpedo boat that has just oeen introduced into the French navy. It is much smaller than the ordinary torpedo boat, and very light. The torpedc is carried outside, attached to the hull of the boat, but disengageable at the will of the captain. The schoolboys in Eugene City have a summary way of disposing of legal questions relating to the ohool house property. Some one had claimed a portion of the school house lot, and during the vacation had fenced it in. On the school assembly the boys disposed of that fence in short order. Its a pity that they c.onld not as easily anni hilate the litigation over the title to the lot, but the attorneys have possession of that business. The school district better set the boys -tfter the attorneys. Even the srenius train t is re deeming himself. One of that gentry recently ran three miles to inform a telegraph operator that a broken rail endangered a passenger train, and when the imperfectly working wires would not allow the operator to warn the train in Fea wn, helped to pump a handcar back t the broken rail in time to flag and save the train. The time was so limited that the cowcatcher was extending over the broken rail when the tram was stopped. The tramp dropped don with ex haustion and during the excite ment disappeared altogether, so he scaped the thanks and testimon ials. Faith in humanity must increase over this incident and the cause of the tramp raise in the estimat:o:i of the public.
