Ytsterday's dawn showed a hun dred vessels which had sought the refuge of the breakwater. The refuge wb insufficient, and by 11 o'clock the sea broke over the Ireakwater, wrecked the telegraph station, carried away the fog bell, and rushed shoreward, sweeping away the steamboat pier. The piers of Hrown & Co. and Lace Dros. ;ave away and were swepi to sea. The United States marine hospital was dashed from its moor i igs and sent spinning down the leach. The Jones life-saving sta tion, forty feet above high water mark, was flooded and its founda tion undermined. llugheyville, a suburb between the town and the beach, is sub merged, and its lOO inha litant! fled for their lives, iearing all theii possessions behind. The mate and two seamen caught a spar ami drifted all night. At daybreak the others were discovered. There has been no communica tion with Longport and great ami etv is felt ior the safety of the residents. IMMENSE DAMAGE IN ATLANTIC CITY. Atlantic City, (N. J.) Sept. 12. It will take months for this city to recover from the loss the storm has caused. Tl e wind still blows 35 to 40 miles an hour and it is still raining. The beach tides have not been large to day ; consequently, are unaccompanied by further dam age. The meadows are still three or four feet under water. ANXIOUS STEAMSHIP OWNERS. New York, Sept. 12. The steamer Columbia from Havana is three days overdue and the owners are anxious. It is rumored that a large Sound steamer is on the rocks near Fort Schuyler. Nothing detinite can be learned yet. I plieaval of Kocks I nder the Mills of a l'aper Company. There was a remarkable occurrence it the mills of the Combined Locks l'ap r Company at Combined Locks, 6ve miles below Appleton, Wis. On Saturday, from some unknown cause, there was an upheaval of the rock upon which the mills are located, throw iug the mill walls out of plumb, cracking the great wall of stone and cement twenty feet thick, and mak ing a saddleback several hundred feet long aid six inches high in the bed rock beneath the mill. An artesian well 'JOO foot away on the idutl' has dried up. The damage to the mill and machinery wiil amount to several thousand dollars.
