A Wash- ton siieftial savs that lanner bid j good bye to all the men in his omcy at night, and was not at his dt-fk to-day. A special to a iiioriiin paper says that President Harrison said to a friend yesterday that Tanner would have to go out of the pension oilice. He said he was reluctant to part with him on account of the embarrassment it would place him in, considering tho indorsement given the com missioner at Milwaukee, but he added it was altogether out of the question to keep him. The presi dent t-aid he bad repeatedly talked to Commissioner Tanner and urged him to give his tongue less exercise but that everywhere he went and upon the slightest provo cation he "put his foot into it." It is understood that tlie commis sioner's resignation is at the re quest of tlie president, and it will be disposed of within a few days. It for ten days or more has simply been a question of how to drop him without Fending the soldiers. The statement made in the dis patches from this city to the ell'ect that Tanner was to take the place of (icncral Rosecrans as register of the treasury is without foundation. A state ment issued by the pension bureau says: In July and August there wa advanced to pension agents on requisition, $31,700,000, while tlie amount disbursed by agents in the same mouth was .ll,Wy''J0. I know three cierks who have held their positions twenty years or more and command large salaries. The secret of their popu larity is that they are jut as polite to a lady who does not purchase as one who does. If she buys noth ing to-day, to-morrow she will, frequently a lady goes into a store fur an article which she very much needs. She asks for it, examines it, prices it, and liuds it cost 14.50, and she has but $4 in her pocket; rather than tell this to the clerk, vho has not sense enough to divine it, she says it is too short, too long, or not the right shade. Louis clerk thinks the proper thing to do is to jerk it from under her gaze, shove it in a box and strike the box on the counter, thereby trying to insult a lady and succeeding in losing a customer for his employer. I had set my heart upon buying a certain article of furniture, and thought I had suffi cient money ; to I went, into a btore and found just what I wanted, but it oust ifo more than 1 possessed. 1 made some trivial excuse, intend ing to save money and return for it ; but the clerk was two obtuse to take the hint, and followed me to the door with his importunities. The City of New York and Teutonic were both due yesterday, but have not been sighted. The other steamers due to-day are the Wis consin, State, !erniania and Ham mona.
