The Chicago Tribune in referring to the recent disastrous fires on the Pacific Coast says that the coast may well claim the distinction of being the lurid section of the United states in 1SS9. The entire losses by large conflagrations in the United States since th 1st of January last amount to $61,205,060 of which large sum California and Washington territory alone contri bute $30,300,000, or nearly one half. The items in California are as follows: February 21 , Gurrne ville, $3.) J,0OO; June 25. Benicia, 225,000; July 2, Durano, $300,- 000; July 7, Lskcrfield, $1,250,000; July 12, Fresno, $200,000; August 20, Trucked, $75,000; August 25, Fort Costa, $600,000. Washington has five largo tires to its credit, footing up $27,35'j,000 as follows. April 10, Cheney, $250,000 ; June G, Seattle, $15,000, 000; Juno 22, Vancouver, $100,000; July 5. Ellcnshurg, $2,000,000; August 5, Spokane Falls, $10,000, W0. Then comes the lire at the little town of Linkville in this .state last Friday, which destroyed nearly $200,000 worth of property. In these fires the business inter- fts of each of the twelve towns v. ere substantially wipeu out. Kiu:h a destruction as this is almost unparalleled in the record of fires in the country and opens up a most suggestive field for investiga tion for the insurance companies. Tiie enterprise and rustle charac teristic of the towns of this coast was exhibited in its fullest force. Business was only temporarily sus pended, and all of the burned towns are rebuilding bigger and fcetter than ever. FA CTS ABOUT RAILWA YS. The interstate coauaerce com mission lias issued its annual report, prepared by Mr. Henry C. Adams. The total income for the same number of miles of road was $1,000,214.(591, and the total expenditure, exclusive of better ments, fSS9,4S7,t)91. The revenuy per passenger iter mile was H.349 :euts, while the average est of carrying one paFsenger one mile was 2.042 cento ; revenue per ton of freight per mile, 1.001 cent; average foit of carrying one ton of freight one mile, G3 cents; revenue per tmin mile, passenger trains, 41.139; average cost of running a passenger train one mile, 84.691 cents; revenue per train-mile, freight trains, $1,657; average cost ! running a freight train one mile, $1.033 ; average cost per train-mile of a:l trains earning revenue, 9.05 cents ; percentage of operating ex penses to operating iucone, 05.34 cents. Gladstone had the fpllowijig kind words to say in referring to the rapid in crease of the population of America : "1 wi&h to recognize American's right to , he considered, prospec tively at least, and even now to Mime extent,' the great organ of the r-Werful English (tongtie. I wish also to iadulge in feelingof satisfac tion on reflecting that no cause on earth, unless our own folly, now or hereafter, ought to divide us from one another or revive those causes .it honorablo or less honorable con tentions that have heretofore pre vailed among us." Two Russian men-of-war are raid to be cruising in Uncle Sam's fishing pond iu the Pehring sea, watching evehtrt there. The Czar, however, will probably not care to interfere in the fishery squabble, lie would find Americans w orse than the bomb throwers of his own realm. Uncle Sam has away of sitting down upon troublesome potentates as heavily as a brick house. Tiiurk i-? t-ruall doubt that iS'og cr Sullivan really believes that he woulil ho an ornament to con- irress. Sullivan, like nrost Boston- ians, is not aflllcted with modesty, 2.n' when lie sees tr:en sen! to con-; i.TC88 purely because they have j monev, lit; can't M-e v.hv he should ; not pet similar honors on the score ' of muscli' . It is announced that it is a pait of the plans of the Union Pacific to extend their lines in Oregon and Washington within the next few years. Ciencral Manager Kemtle says the Northwest is a great country, and it is the policy of ti e company to build many miles of new road here in th near future. Hox.
