IMMENSE DAMAGE IN ATLANTIC CITY.
Atlantic City, (N. J.) Sept. 12.
It will take months for this city
to recover from the loss the storm

been large to day ; consequently,
are unaccompanied by further dam

An extremely Jtout, choleric old

beastly temper, for things had gone

and then he cast his eyes about as if
in search os something to kick as an
outlet for his tempestuous state of

"That book agent is out here, sir, '
said a clerk, thrusting his held
through the door.
"Show him in," yelled the old
gentleman greedily, '"and I'll kick
the everlasting stutliog out of him.'
A minute later a pretiy little girl
came demurely io, and, calmly draw

desk, smiled sweetly.
"Just excus'e me a minute," said
the old fellow, '"there's a nasty book
agent coming."
"I am the book agent, sir," said
the girl, and she thrust a hand away
down through a hole in her dress and
brought up a volume ,
''Can't I sell you a copy, sir," she
said cheerfully, running throlgb the

The OtHeer Uecame Sympathetic.
At miduight the other night a pa

"Come, mister, no one is allowed

"But I have a good excuse." re

"What is it?"
''See that house ovor there ?"' Well
please do nic the favor to go and rin;

The ollicer ascended the steps and
rang the bell. A head was thrust
out of an open chamber window and
a female voice demanded:
"Now, who is there?"
"Madam," replied the officers, "is
William Dockey at home ?"
"No, sir , and I don't expect him
until daylight," suapped the woman,
and at the same moment a bowlful of
water descended on the officer's head
and half drowned him.
"Well," said the man on the grass,
as the dripping officer came up, "you
see how it ie, don't you ?" I'm
Dockey. That's Mrs. Dockey."
"I think I see," replied the officer.
"You can remain right where you

Disarming an Unseen Fe.
''This w a? sometime a paradox," as
Hamlet says. Since, however, the
people cf America and other unU
have been enabled to pit Hostetter's
&tcma?h Bitters against tbat unscea
foe, malaria, it is uo longer a paradox,
but an easv possibility. Whatever
malaria evolves ita misty venom to
poison the air, and decaying unw hole
some vegetation imprcgnater the
water, there, lu the very stronghold
of miasma, is the auxiliary potentlo
disarm the foe and assure efficient
protection. Fever and ague, bilious
remittent, dumb ague una ague cake,
no matter how tenaciously they have
fasienei their clutch on the 6y6tem,
are tiret forced to relax their grasp
and eventually to abandon it alto
gether. But it ir preventive force
that should chiefly recommend the
Bitters to persons dwelling in malaria
'urscd localities, for it is a certain
buckler of defence against which the
enemy .s poeilees. Cures, likewise,
dyspepsia, rheumatism, kidney and
billious ailments.
