A manufacturer who, when a
boy, had worked in a taper factory,
and bad thus become familiar with
the clays used for sizing and
weighting paper, was riding along
a new road in St. Lawrence county,
wheo he noticed a peculiar forma
tion of solt white rock through
which the road passed for some
distance. Taking a sample, he ex
amined it carelully undei the
microscope, and found that it was
fibrous, and evidently peculiarly
adapted to paper making. He
then had tests made by manufact
urers, who reported 6o favorably
that he bought the land aad began
mining. He is bow shipping over
100 tons a day, and his product is
rapidly displacing the clays lor
ineily used, as its fibrous nature
makes it prt of the warp and weft
of the paper, instead of sizing only.
No other such deposit is at present
known m the country.

ports increased from $330,000,000
in '86 to $390,000,000 in '87. Of
this amount $26,000,000 of the ex
ports ot '87 were precious metals,
$13,125,010 coming to the United
Btates, nearly $9,000,000 being sent
to Great Britain, and the third
largest amout $3,500,000 coing
to France. Syain, the country that
gave Mexico its language and
many of its characteristics, only re
ceived $500,000 w oilh of the total
exports of Mexico for 1887. The
country is beginning to do its min
ing accoiding to modern principles.
Where placer mining was a method
followed in former years, the
crushel and hydraulic pump arc
now developing mines in districts
which were formerly thought to be
barren and worthless. Not only is
she famous for raeials, but she
grows vast quantities of coee,.)ut?,
and many kinds of grasses, and ex
ports many kinds of wood for build
ing and cabinet work, and somo
india rubber. Copper also prom
ises to become a leading expor'.,
and Chili and the Lake Superior
region, in the United Btates, will
prooably have a strong rival before
ions.

should bo rather hard than soft, as

An espalier pear tree at Pollet,
France, was planted in 15S0, and is
now the oldest in Europe. It spreads

A laboratory intended mainly for
the study of bacteria in milk is to be
established in Ikrlia. Infant mor
tality is known to he largely due o
unwholesome milk, which can be
rendered harmless by destroying the
germs.
The hiehest pressur j used to drive
a water-wheel is claimed by a valley
near Grenoble, France, where a tur
bine tea feet in diameter has been
operated since 1S75 with a head of
1C38 feet. A flow of about seventy
five gallous of water per second gives
a force of 15 '0 horse-power.
Some experiments lately made at
the Royal Polytechnic School at
Munich show that the strength of
camel-hair belting reaching 6315
pounds per square inch, The camel
hair belt is unaffected by acids.
The toUl length of the submarine
cables at present in use is given by
an Austrian paper at 113,031 miles.
Of this length 102,531 miles belong
to various cable companies aad
10,500 miles are government property.
The deepest ocean soundings were
recently made by the British survey
ing ship Egeria, the one depth being
4295, tne other 4430 fathoma (about
equal to five English miles). The
first sounding was made in latitude
24 deg. 37 min. south, longitude 175
deg. 8 min. west, the last sounding
some twelve miles to the south.
According to Gollner'a numerical
scale for vho hardness of metals,
ranging over eighteen degrees tho
following is the order iu whioh this
quality places them, beginning with
the least, pure son lead, followed
successfully, by pure tin; pure hard
lead; soft tempered copper; pure soft
copper, cast; soft Babbit metal, hav
ing copper eighty-five, tin tep, zinc

bon; crucible steel, tempered and

pered and drawn violet or orange;
crucible steel, tempered and drawn
steel color; bard bronze lor beansgs;
cast crucible Bteel of glassy hardness.
Pointed cylinders are made from each
of the metals of this scale, and these
points are used for testing the hard
ness of other metals, being for this
purpose drawn a certain number of
times over the polished surface of the
latter.
