The New York Tribune says that the British victory over the dervishes was both necessary and justifiaWle, yet it was in its essential features a mas sacre. The leader of the fanatical horde, twelve emirs, and nearly all the fighting warriors were slaught ers 1. Few prisoners were taken ; 1,500 dervishes were left dead upon the battlefield; and the British "looses' Were trivial. The details of the conflict produce a painful im pression of butchery in cold blood G-meral GrenWi's tactics were of the simplest order. He posted his inf.xntry in a favorable position and then with his cavalry recon noitred the enemy's camp, making a feint of retreating and luring the desert warriors toward the main boJy of his army. They were drawn into a slaughter-pen and when escape was impossible the cavalry pnd infantry mounted on camels swept down upon them and be.it t-it a to earth. This military operation resembled the clubbing of a bewildered herd of seal in the Pribylor Islands when retreat to the sea has been cut off and the helpless animals are left at the mercy of the native destroyers. It was a massacre of a horde of wretched, starving, despairing children of the desert, who had journeyed hundreds of miles across trackless levels of sand to fight the battles of their faith. Supplies of water and food had been cut off as they advanced, and civilized war fare with all its inhumanity and 'barbarity had reduced them to an j abject stage of misery ; and when the day of inal bloodshed came !iey were fired upon and butcher el without mercy. Such victories reflect no luster upon the British arms. The most that can be said of them is that it is necessary bar barism. If Wad-el-N'jumi's host had not been broken up and anni hilated it would have entered lower Egypt and massacred the popula tion as it advanced toward the Pyramids and the sea. It was Slaughter terrible and relentless in it way to prevent slaughter even m :re terrible and relentless. Old time memories will be re vived by the announcement that Mrs. Ole Bull wile ot the renowned violinist, accompanied by nor lather, Hon. J. (J. Thorp, of E.u CKir, Wis., and several other people, from the same locality, parsed through Spokane Falls en rouu- to Alaska receutly. Ihe party intended to stop here for a few days, but, on account of the fire and 'consequent lack of accom modations, concluded not to do so, ntil their return from Alaska, lira. tJu'.l divides her time betweeu her parents and friends in Wiscon sin and the family of her distin- j f.istt'd husband in Europe. Owe j ot m r brothers married a daughter i ct ihf poet Longfellow about two i year ago. The music of Ole Bull's i vi;m will dwell always in the j inrm--ry of every person who evcri li-.ii ..rd to its sweet strains. ' a., clicking telegraph tells the j fciorj of a fivn year old bo, pla- jiu in sage hashes near his j parents residence in California, i ii irr wly escaping being shot. lie ! tra-s nitting oa the ground, with hit a -l resting on hia chin, when a hud-tfrom some careless hunter's nil came singing along and passed between the child's hand and neck giazi g the fingers of his hand and al o craping the skin off his neck. He was very badly frightened, and att.T he had recovered from the f ii ck looked around, with a play la t for the shooter, but no one t hi J be found. It is about time t.i. ihe weapons of these careless li ir8 should be turned upen t I ( i selves, and an example made ch a durable character, as to all future Nimrods for indulg ti such culpable carelessness. A recent crazy attempt to assas el t e Dom Pedro, the reigning m i arch of Brazil, whose wise and Ira ane administration, now rt .i-hing into the second half cen t.'. y of its duration, has made him popular and beloved by all classes oi .;ople in his own country and hi'lily respected abroad, will be 1 .n'ted upon with horror and regret. I; vas the woik of an insane youth yr lolly irresponsible w ho attempted to shoot the emperor as he was leaving the theatre where he had spent the evening with his family. A legal trial is in progress and on its results the American people rely for a correct version of the affair. Probably however, legal technicalities will so obscure the facts and conclusions that nothing definite on convincing will be put uponrecord. The latest scheme in trusts is a book trust, planned by English capitalists, who are negotiating t purchase all of the publishing houses who issu cheap editions of the pirated foreign authorship pub lished books in this country. In other words they ar waking to gain here what (hey cannot at home, the unpaid for n- ot the copyrights of their home authorr. At a recent fire in San Francisco the firemen were disgusted, after several hours herculean effort to save a quantity of material in one of the burning buildings, to find that it was asbestos, a substance that fire cannot have any effect upon. The Union Iron works of San Francisco, have given the new crui er, Charleston, which they are building for the United States navy, several trials on San Fran cisco Bay, and fiad its action and sailing qualities perfectly satisfac tory. Persons having rooms to rent tc students will do well to communi cate with I'Jesident Condit about the matter. Pupils are now seek ing places for the fall term, which opens on Tuesday, September 10.
