THE HORRORS OF WAR.
mi. -i fti.nfWvishes
The annihilation of the derwsnes
ia Egypt by the English army,
makes another chapter in tre nor
rorsof human war. The New
York Tribune says that the British
victory over the dervishes was both
necessary and justifiaWle, yet it
was in its essential features a mas
sacre. The leader of the fanatical
horde, twelve emirs, and nearly all
the fighting warriors were slaught
ers 1. Few prisoners were taken ;
1,500 dervishes were left dead upon
the battlefield; and the British
"looses' Were trivial. The details of
the conflict produce a painful im
pression of butchery in cold blood
G-meral GrenWi's tactics were of
the simplest order. He posted his
inf.xntry in a favorable position
and then with his cavalry recon
noitred the enemy's camp, making
a feint of retreating and luring the
desert warriors toward the main
boJy of his army. They were
drawn into a slaughter-pen and
when escape was impossible the
cavalry pnd infantry mounted on
camels swept down upon them and
be.it t-it a to earth. This military
operation resembled the clubbing
of a bewildered herd of seal in the
Pribylor Islands when retreat to
the sea has been cut off and the
helpless animals are left at the
mercy of the native destroyers. It
was a massacre of a horde of
wretched, starving, despairing
children of the desert, who had
journeyed hundreds of miles across
trackless levels of sand to fight the
battles of their faith. Supplies of
water and food had been cut off as
they advanced, and civilized war
fare with all its inhumanity and
'barbarity had reduced them to an j
abject stage of misery ; and when
the day of inal bloodshed came
!iey were fired upon and butcher
el without mercy. Such victories
reflect no luster upon the British
arms. The most that can be said
of them is that it is necessary bar
barism. If Wad-el-N'jumi's host
had not been broken up and anni
hilated it would have entered lower
Egypt and massacred the popula
tion as it advanced toward the
Pyramids and the sea. It was
Slaughter terrible and relentless in
