This is a portion of the tract owaed bv Mr. Van Fridagh, which was bonded by Mayor DeLashmutt for the city for a site for a town hall. He bonded the whole tract for $35,000, and had the option of taking the quarter block for $20,000 and has now sold it at a clean prof it of $5000. - , . til . Ths Albany Minir.s; and Milling Company Patting M ;re Capit .l in their Miaes. The stockholders of the Albany Mining ai'd Milling Company held a meeting yesterday, at which it was voted to raise the assessment upon the stock heretofore fixed at 10 per cent, to 20 per cent. 2 he amount received from this action will furnish the company ample capital to develop their" mines. They have a force of men steadily at work now, and Mr. E. J. Bann ing, one of the members of the company, will leave for San Fran cisco in a day or two, taking with him a quantity of the ore to be tested. The company has made a strike in one of these claims which promises big things, and has elicited no little interest in these mines. Mr. W. C. Dean, of the Tacma Reduction Works, is in the city on his return from a several week's trip at their mines, and is favora bly impressed with the ore taken out, which combines galena, silver and gold in suflieient quantities as to leave no doubt ;is to the fact that it can be worked on a paying basis. Important Ileal Estate Deal. F. A. liurkhart.real estate agent, now oilers for sale 44 vacant city lots on the following plan, to-wit: One of these lots, making in all 45 lots has a large two-story fine dweling house situated on it which cost $1800. This house and the lot it is situated on will not be sold, but will positively be given .way to one of the purchasers of one ot these 44 lots, these lots will be sold for the extretnelv low fi,,uro 0t lol) ea-h. and as each lot is sold the purchaser of it will get a numuer. luese number when the lots are all sold will be placed in a box and shaken up and each purchaser of one of the 44 lots will draw out of the box one of thes; numbers, and the one that draws out the highest number will be given a warrantee deed to the $1800 house and lot, positively free of charge. Thus one of the pur chasers of these 44 lots is bound to get two good lots and an $1800 house for the small sum of $150. This is an excellent chance for one to get a good building lot for the small sum of $150, besides you have one chance in 44 to draw this fine $1800 house and lot, which will be given to one of the 44 purchas ers. Any person can purchase one or more lots and will be allowed to draw as many numbers as the number of lots he buys. The plat ot the urnpeity and the terms of sale can be seen at the real estate ollice of F. A. Burkhart. Horses a Necessity. Editor Daily Herald. The fire last Tuesday night was another conyincing proof of the need of a team for one of the file engines. The location of the fire was over one mile from the engine, houses, partly over newlv graveled streets. and no lair-minded citizen witnes sed the eflorts of the firemen pull ing the steamers this long distance without acknowleging the necessi ty of such addition to our fire ap paratus. Iheiecent heavy losses by fire in Pacific coast cities warns us to be on the alert and prepare in every way possible against such a disaster here. In former davs when the citv was small the fire-' men could quickly and sasily reach any fire within the limits; but not so now ; recent additions to the city has caused it to cover so much area that it require much time, which in many instances might be very valuable for the firemen to take their apparatus to fiies which start in the suburbs, as did the one of Tuesday night. And anain, newly graded streets over which they could take their engines now. will be nearly impossible for them without horses when the winter rains w ill have made them muddy and bard to travel. As one citizen I say, let the city council furnish at least one team, as it is an actua' necessity. Scbscrikei:. The MarkeU. Our local markets remain quiet. The new crop of wheat is coming in very rapidly and the prospects are'hatan increased amount will be stored here. The market is firm at 03 cts. offered, but no con siderable sales are being made. All are holding for better prices. In Portland the wheat market show no change. Fin Display. Mr. Settlemier, of the Tangent nursery, came into the city yester day with his hack and brought with him a branch of a Silver prune that caps the climax for pro- J auction any where. The branch was about three or four feet long and contained a least a full half bushel of the fruit, stuck in and piled up in a most marvellous man ner, and the frait was all good size, marketable fruit. It was a won derful production. Mistakes Impresilen. Some of the papers have mixed up bad geography with the incor rect statement that the Oregon Pa cific Co. is preparing to build a branch road from Gatesville to the Meadows. The Mill City Lumber ing Co. is arranging for a track from Mill City, a distance of six or eight miles, into the timber belt on the Linn county side of the river, but no road is to be built from Gatesville to the Meadows.
