THE BUSTLK NOT NEW. It Was Known and Written About Orer a Century Ago. As an article of female attire the bustle is apparently doomed. A marked feature of the garden party ke'id at Marlborough House on Thursday is said te have been the "total disappearance of tbe cushion n a , , k a hortt Til wa.cf " But why this synonym? Accord ing to Dr. Murray's mammoth English Dictionary, one T, Monro, in 1788, uroduced tbe following cauplet: Such locks the nymphs now wear in silks who rustle. In rich luxuriance reaching to the bustle. The familiar woid has, conse quently, literary sauctieo, out despite this fact, plus tbe antiquity to which it can evidently lay claim, the disappearance of the thinn which it represents is not !ikly to be reg rded with any profound feelings tf regret. insi i:e. Julius Gradwohl calls the atten tion of the citizens of Albany to in sure before it is too late. He rep resents seven insurance companies w ho carry a capital of f 70,000,000, with a cash deposit in the state of Oregon of $350,000. Farmers w ho have spent the en tire year in producing a crop of wheat should run no risks now, but promptly get insurance upon I he crop and guard against fire, for if they lose their crop by lire,it is a calamity to the whole community as well as an irreparable injury to to them. Seattle, Ellensburg, Vancouver and Spokane Falls has nothing to do with our companies ; the losses will all be paid and still we are ready for business, the same as af ter the Chicago fire. Post master General Wanamaker has issued an order extending the age limit governing the appointment of letter carriers in mn civil ser vice post offices from thirty-five to forty years. The age limitation does not apply to persons honor ably discharged from Army or Navy. The seizure of the Canadian sealer ''Black Diamond' in Bher lugs sea by the U. S. Cutter 4,Rusn" ilill continues to be talked about here. One thing may be set down as certain the administration is determined to carry out the law, and every vessel canghti llegally taking sells in Behrings sea will be seized. Representative Farquhar, of New York, who was a promi nent member of the Congressional committee which made the investi gation of the seal fisheries that led to the enactment of the law under which this teizure was made, is now in Washington. Speaking of the seizure and its probable out come he said: '"This country will go right en asserting and main taining its jurisdiction over the Bthring Sea fisheries, and England cant lay a word in earnest about the matter. Russia stands readv to make good our title derived by purchase from her. Great Britain cannot afford to antagonize two great nation Russia and the United States. There is no doubt about Russia's disposition in tbe matter. They guaranteed us a title and England cannot seriously question that title without antag onizing Russia. If she went into a fight she would have two antag onists. This is all well understood in England, as wc i, as in Russia and America.
