Barney Wilson, who was arrest ed at Montague, Cal., for shooting Nick Zimmerman in this city on Friday, will arrive on this morn ing's train in custody of officer Mitchell of that place. His pre liminary examination will be held in Justice Humphrey's court, prob ably this afternoon. Zimmerman is still lying in a critical condition, with small chances of recovery. In these days of frequent lires, insurance companies are carefully looking into the lire protection of the different cities of the coast. Yesterday Mr. Parklmrst, agent of the Pacific Ins. Co., in company with Ohicf Engineer C. 11. Stew art, made an examination of the fire apparatus and the water sup plv of Albanv. Mr. I'aikhurst con sidered this city provided with bet- j ter are protection than any other of its Mze on the coast, which is verv true. Fire at l!ro wvill. Wednesday evening the resi dence of Airs. Katharine Putnam, at I'.rownsville, came near burning down. It is not known how the lire started, as it caught in the bed clothing on the second floor and no one was near. The fire lasted but a few- minutes, but suili cieutly long to consume the bed and bedding and burn 'he inside of the room considerably. The river is lower than it has been for years. It marks an inch and a half below low water mark. The first was between Langdon and Wil liams, the latter winning the race by about two feet. The second was run by E. G. Cameron and Williams, which was decided a tie race.
