trip to Fish Lake. Their trout
catch was up to such a dizzy highth
as to lay all previous trout yarns in

The Brownsville Times is in
formed that . another newspaper
will be started at Lebanon in the
near future. It will be called the
Far West Presbyter, and will be
under the management of the
regon Synod of the C. 1. church,
with Rev. J. R. Kirkpatrick as
editor. The first issue will appear

train on the route. These people
are not only residents of California
who have disposed of their prop
erty there and are moving to the
north, where as good and cheaper
land can be secured, but also peo
ple from the East, who have been
induced to go to California, only to
find how badly, in some respects,
the country had been misibpresent-

There were three men drowned
during the fishing season just
closed on the Columbia, two on
the bar. and one in falling from
his boat in front o! the city. This
is the smallest number "of fatal
casualties in any one season in the
history of the business for twenty

A rrast of Harney Wilaoa.
Barney Wilson, who was arrest
ed at Montague, Cal., for shooting
Nick Zimmerman in this city on
Friday, will arrive on this morn
ing's train in custody of officer
Mitchell of that place. His pre
liminary examination will be held
in Justice Humphrey's court, prob
ably this afternoon. Zimmerman
is still lying in a critical condition,
with small chances of recovery.
A purse is being raised bv "Wil
son's friends to defend him, about
$1")0 having been raised for that
purpose.

In these days of frequent lires,
insurance companies are carefully
looking into the lire protection of
the different cities of the coast.
Yesterday Mr. Parklmrst, agent of
the Pacific Ins. Co., in company
with Ohicf Engineer C. 11. Stew
art, made an examination of the
fire apparatus and the water sup
plv of Albanv. Mr. I'aikhurst con
sidered this city provided with bet- j
ter are protection than any other
of its Mze on the coast, which is
verv true.
Fire at l!ro wvill.
Wednesday evening the resi
dence of Airs. Katharine Putnam,
at I'.rownsville, came near burning
down. It is not known how the
lire started, as it caught in the
bed clothing on the second floor
and no one was near. The fire
lasted but a few- minutes, but suili
cieutly long to consume the bed
and bedding and burn 'he inside of
the room considerably. It was
just beginning to catch in the roof
when help arrived, ana by quick
and vigorous woik the flames were
extinguished.

Two foot races were run at New
port Tuesday afternoon. The first
was between Langdon and Wil
liams, the latter winning the race
by about two feet. The second
was run by E. G. Cameron and
Williams, which was decided a tie
race. Several dollars changed
haads on the first race.

about four miles above Corvallis
on the island, was earned last
