He went to church in the morning with the family, and helped Mr. Ilenkle milk the cows in the evening. About bed time, Mr. Ilenkle saw the young man go out of the house as usual before going to bed and thought nothing ot it. About nine o clock, alter the i lamny nau reureu, Jir. v. i . Tha Salem Woolen Mills-Tho Hawkins Trial - Fatal Shotting Accident. Special to the Herald. Drain, July 17. Thomas Han cock, living" seven miles from Drain, met with an accident yes terday which will probably prove fatal." He picked up a 2L--calibre Winchester rifle, and, hearing an explosion, thought some one near by had discharged Ore arms. He soon felt a choking sensation, and found that he had shot himself through the windpipe, the ball lodging in the back of the neck. SALEM NEWS. Sal km, July 1G. The Thomas Kay Woolen Mill Co. filed articles of incorporation yesterday with the secretary of state. The enterprise, business pursuit and occupation shall be the erection, owning and operat';g of a woolen factory, in cluding the purchase and sale of wool and all kinds of raw material, and manufacturing and sale of all kinds of woolen, worsted and talk goods, erecting, owning and oper ating such other manufactories as the directors may order. Mayer, of P.radley, were appointed noaries public to-day. The trial oi W. E. Hawkins for the murder of F. II. Ogle, was con cluded this evening, as far as the testimony and argument of the c. unsfl goes. Judge Roise with held his instructions until to-morrow morning and allowed the jury to go about their business until then. This is thoughta rather novel proceeding, and seems to divest the case of its great importance. Richard Williams made a great speech for the prosecution. An Artesian Well. The people of Harney valley are .aisiug means to bore an artesian j well. The unusually dry season I has produced lamentable results ! all over Eastern Oregon, and water has become invaluable. How to procure it is a question of para mount importance to the settlers, and they are proceeding to do for themselves all that is possible. If "'lie is anv iii.uc in luvoruoio io- there is anv . .- boring, lhe great water reservoirs to be found to the west in the Cas j cades should furnish deep stores of itii-i - it-uuy to risi: io me suridcc. The Rlne mountains are yet nearer and if being surrounded by vast mountain walls that possess untold stores of water is a promise of water from artesian sources, then i the inland empire should possess j means to create a paradise for i ts J population. i .Siiniiiior The drv season is always liable to see terrible fires sweep the country, but this year town after! town has almost gone out of exist-1 ence. The forests have not as yet i been ablaze, which is to be ac-, I counted for by the fact that in j i former vears (ires have covered I nearly all tlie forest regioiis liable to such a fate. Possiblv the forests j are not near enough to civilization i i to become a sacrifice to human i j cupidity. On the head waters of; the PesChutes the bunchgrass country has been swert by fire and thousands of acres ef ttood ranse is destroyed. This is mite a serious! loss, as good range is none too plentiful. While lire has destroyed ; thousands of dollars worth of prop-; erty for the Pacific people this I summer, floods of water have dev-' astated the East, wrecking another ' Johnstown in New York. Such is ' life at the East and at the West, At Kllfiixhurg'. The people of Ellensburg have gone to work with energy to re build the burned city. Men have been engaged this week shooting down brick walls through burned districts, which have been menac- s ing the satety ot workmen and pedestrians. There is great activ ity all over the district removing debris, excavating cellars and lay ing foundations. Thus far con tracts have been made for forty three brick buildings at an average cost of $12,000, aggregating over half a million. A great number of frame buildings are going np out side the fire limit3. LoU at a ltargain. . A plat ef the town of Oatesville, a new and thriving town on the i eastward line of the Oregon Pacific is on file at the office of Curran & Monteith in this city. This town is situated near the Santiam mineB which are now being developed, j and is destined to become a thriv-1 ing trading town. Lots have been placed upon the market at the ex- j ceedingly low price of $12 to $40. Money invested in these lots now will bring a big return in a very short time. It will pay those in terested to call and see Messrs. Curran & Monteith concerning this property. - - I ;! Investment. For a small amount of money ! that will in a year's time donble or j treble your money, such an oppor- i tunity is oflered in South Al- j bany, only one-half mile from the city, embracing the tract of land from Elkins' falls to the fair trround road. There is said to be over oO pile drivers at work along the Seattle water front. It is generally believed that the. Be'.lingham Ray railroad has absorbed the Westminster South ern. The relief committee of Seattle has issued notice that the city is no longer in need of outside assist ance. Mrs. Eastenhever and child w ere murdered near Coquille City on Monday by an angry landlord named John Oilman and citizens threaten to lynch him. The Chinamen of Ellensburg stole a large quantity of goods dur ing the fire and since then the feel ing against them has been strong. The general feeling prevails that they must go. Shortage in the Salmon 1'ack. Fish Commissioner Thompson has figured it out that the salmon pack on the lower Columbia for the Feason to date amount!? to 20J,000 cases, a shortage of 60,000 com pared with the same last year. The run of fish has been, and continues to be, poor. The water being clear the ill nets are catching but few fish, the traps doing most of the catching. Commissioner Thomp son says t'-.e. law prohibiting the taking of salmon Saturday night and Sunday is being violated by a number of "the fishers, and the in tention now is to establish river patrols and put a stop to the law breaking, or break somebody's pocket book. The violation of the fish laws must be stopped. The Fir Still Burns. Notwithstanding the fact that it is over a month since the great fire occurred at Seattle and that several showers of rain have fallen since then, it is said that smoke may still be seen coming from the large heap of sawdusr near where the Commercial mill stood. Saturday several piles were pulled up. the lower ends of which were still on tire. TTANCOrVEli r.KEUOX DRAUGHT AT V t'harles Keifcr's Urcwery at 3 cents per las.
