Stanley. Wheu young Rowlands as Stanley was, of course, known be fore he was adopted by the gentle man who took him to America at tended the St. Asapli Utii.ti School, the schoolmaster had so high an opinion of him that he used to put him in charge of the sc.lioulboys dar- iug his absence. The boy was quite equal to the task of maintaining tiis cipline. He would adow no uuc to question his authority. Kather than suffer any one to tak j liberties with him he would give the boys a goo:l thrashing all around, ard this he used to do so effectually that no boy was found bold enough to (lis utc his authority. The boy was particii'.ariv fond of Geography and arithmetic, aud seemed never so happy as wlan, poiDter iu hand, he was aliowed to ramble at his own sweet will over the faee of the map. lie seemed to his fellow pupils tn have the latitude and longitude of each place at his liugers' ends. He was also a good penman, aud on this account was ofteu selected by the porter to enter the names of visitors in a book kept for that pur pose, aud at times he was even invited into the clerk's office to help with the accounts. "T. L. L. W." says that having searched the books at the workhouse in order to find if there are any traces of Stanley there, he discovered among the enteries the name of John Row lands some eight times. The first entry is that of his admission to the house, which took place on February 20, 1S47. He is entered as belonging to the parish of Denbigh, and as hav ing been born iu 1S41 (this date, by the way, tallies exactly with Dr. Pierce's aecount). His name next occurs iv the lit of inmates fe the years 1S51-56. Previous to this no list of names for each year was made out. Only the names of those who were admitted or discharged during the year were registered. The last entry is dateit May 13, IS5G, and is the time when he finally lelt the workhouse. He is there reported to have "gone to his uncle at the National School, Holywell." Other books, such as the leporter's report books ard the clerk's account books, nny throw additional light upon the early days of Stanley. TYPESETTING BY MACHINERY, Description of a New Process I'fccd in Knglaml. The London Globe, describing a nuw typesetting machine, says: As the operator works the keys the line of prm t is formed befote him, so that corrections may be made ai once A i oach impress of his linger a sheet of brass, with its preper letter iu the center, slips into its place, and at the same time exposes a character on tii-s edge visible to the worker Then as soon as tiic line is completed, it is Sdized and autonn tically jtulifcol Then it is carried to a little lu;o c to be stereotyped, the line being finally thrust out on a ledge after be ing cast. The types ar than auto matically distributed. It seems slow to read, but is not so in reality, as the processes proceed simultaneously, the typesetter's work ou the Vcyr being scarcely interrupted. Of course one wants to see such an invsntiou at work for a length of time iu a priut ing office before pr nounciug a final opinion upon it, as no test is quit so good as that of practical wo.U, and it has not vet been introduced it to the office of au English paper; but if what the investor tells me of its speed be correct, and if it can be made, as he ays, for something between 1150 and 200, there is no doubt of its being a very useful as wtn as a wonaenui in vention. BUFFALO CATCH. Several Head of the Rare Animals Secured by Party. Chkyknne, Wyo., July 16. Steve and Wilson Williams, raachnien at Rockdale, Carson county, are here for recreation after an exciting and profitable buffalo hunt on the Rtd desert, 80 miles from Rawlings. Tbe presence of a herd of bison at this place has been known for year.', but the topography of the country made the capture of rare animals exceed ingly difficult. The Williams broth ers employed as their assistants two cow-boys who were fearless riders and skilled in the use of the lariat. As mounts they selected powerful horses of great speed and proven en durance. The chase lasted the greater portion of three days, and was a series of adventures. Two full-grown cows were captured the first day, a big bull the uext, while another bull and pair of females re warded the perserving hunters the third day. Hunters say there are between forty and fifty full grown bison and a few calvss in the herd. They have Been offered five hundred dollars each for their prizes, but de mand more. California CaLB-Cure.
