THE NOBLE RED MEN. They Are hut Worthless Idlers Maintained by the Gov't. THK INDIAN AS II E l-S. What I: Costs to Koep Tom -Millions of Acres tf Land Odupitd -Their Daily L.le. Oiualia lUc. The Sioux Indians, as limited at from the Eastern view, are a raou that is greatly abused by the j-overn-oient, but from tho view taken by tie .Western people, who have had. a, ., -., . chanee'fo atady: Mr riif y habits, the only good loiliaa U U dead one. At the Iowcr Jsrale ' agency there are about 1200 Indians, 8upiorted in idUncsa by the govern ment, costing annually floO.OOtr. Thv preat reservation contains 24,000,000 acres of line farming aud grazing lands, an area nearly as lare aa tb state of New York, aud five times a great as Massachusetts, inhabited by about 2ti,00l) Indians, or about a many people aa live in two tenement blocks in New York city. These lands arc not used at all by the Indi ans, as the government furnishes them with provisions, clothing, tarn machinery (which they never use), cattle, - horses and harness, and iu fact almost every thiag. In the way of clothing the government furnished fine woolen blankets, which 'cost about $4.50 a piece. As soon as the noble red man gets his blanket he crosses the river to Chamberlain and sells it for front 75 cents to .$1. The same is lso the fact with clothing, the most of the farmers dressing in waukapouina, which is the Sisnx for eoverDuicnt goors. Major Anderson, the agent at Crow Creek, is of the opinion that the In dians will never become civilized as long as the government supports tliein. He is dxidedly in favor of the Indians taking their Und in sev eralty and for the government to furnish each family with a complete farm outfit, then tell them they must sup'jort themselves, aud he thinks " that when t'lty sec that the govern mcut means business the Indian question will be settled. The Indian buck scorns work and thinks that only the squaws are mtde to work. A pretty good illus tration of this is r,ld by one of the agency officials. I give it as it wa told to me. 'Last winter, as I was my way to Drulc bottom , I ran across a team of ponies trying to null a largo lutn- w bet wagen up the lull, but it was too heavy tor them, and the buck that was driving ordered his two squaws out to help the ponie, but still they could not make it. I asked him why he did not get out, ami all the answer I received was a grunt. Finally, taking it on ths squaws, who were almost frozen, I added my muscle to that of the quaws and ponies, and we finally got the 'noble red man' and his wagon to the top of the hill." Another pretty goo.l story is told by a contractor, who had the con. tract to build &S0,U00 worth of houses for the Indians. The houses were all built, but the Indians did not move into than. Instead, they moved their tepees or touts next m the houses and during the winter they tore down and burned up all tha houses. Tin 8 shows how much the Iudiana appreciate what the govern ment does for them. They know that the government will support them, and as long as it doe they wilt be a ' shiftless, lazy aud uncivilized, race. . ItB II It INC. NBA, Canada WaatM a Settlement mt Vexed (Jurxtlona.
