THE BOGUS COWBOY. How Captain BogardS liaised a Kow ia the Ctrrn. One of the New York papers pub lished, not long since, a picture of a cowboy in full regalia, with long hair and spurs, who is recoiling in horror from a huge bear. The ferocious animal is one of these stuffed bruins that are used by furriers as business signs in front ot their stores. There is a popular impression that the average cwuoy is nt really as dangerous as he would like to hare people believe. A little affair oc curred at Staten Island when Fore i;ui"h was exhibiting a Wild West show iu connection with his menagerie. Captaui itogardus, the champion otl-hand sli t, and Sutpciidcr Jack wera rival attractions, the latter :ing a cowboy of tho most pro nouueed type. They got into a dis pute, when Kogardus suddenly seized Suspender Jack by his luxuri ant switch ana slammed him down ou the hard .rouni with considerable force, after which liogir.ius jolted the cowboy 's tournure with several kicks fro a well-developed hrogan. Xw, according to all the tradi tions ot the frontier, Suspender Jack should have, as aa overture to the subsequent performance, shot an aperture 'about the tize of a general delivery window of a country post office into the anatomy of Captain Bogardus. Then the intrepid cow boy, with a whoop, should have re moved the dandruff in the captain's hair along with his reeking scalp. For dessert, Suspender Jack should also have bitten a ahunk about the size of a frog out ot the captain' check. This, in view af the traditional ferocity of the cowboy, was the least that was expected ot him; but Sue peuder Jack wen: back on all the tra ditions of the bordar. The cowboy disappeared almost as suddeuly as a broken dollar bill, aud he didn't stop running until he reached the office of a justice of the peace, his wild, lux uriant switch snaping viciously in th vacuum caused by the velocity cf hia flight, Bogardus was arretted1 and fined $10 and cost?. Nearly twenty- five years ago the waters of Mobil bay were the scene cf vna of the Sere tt naval eiicountets of modern times, and the city itst lf was shut off by stroag defenses from the approach ot veesels bearing the United States flag. To-day we welcome officers wearing the uniform of the United States u friends and brothers, and it is one of our dearest hopes that Uncle Sam's war vessels will often Steam past our wharv s or anchor ia front of out city, and that a navy yard for the construction and repair of such vessels will be located at Mount Vernon. Twenty-five years ago the flag of the United States as the ensigu of aa enemy; to-oay it is rue nag we love tha eaiblein to us o! deieuse and protection, of level puient of our resourcts and improvement of our natural advantages. When its silken folds are spread to the hroezes it tells us of a restored and indissoluble union or indestructible states. It is ur tlag. our navy, just as much as I they bel ng to othi-r portions oi our country. Over the waters of Hamptou roads Where once the Merrimac and Moni tor waged a terrific conflict that rev olutionized modern naval warfare. United States war vessels now seam on their way to the navy yard at Norfolk. Their prvsenca there is not only a sifu of national power, hat also of national benificeiive. We trust that the same may be the case in Mobile bay, where th waves chant a monody to the memory of F&rragut and Buchanan, and each glowing sunset is a reflection of their glory. For the renown of the brave men of our civil war, federal aud confederate, is the caramon property of a reunited people, and the peace and prosperity we now enjoy the re sult of a restored union.
