John Wilson, the burglar who vas caught in the City meat mar ket, was arraigned yesterday before Justice Humphrey and held in $500 lond9 to await the action of the .grand jury. Mr. Joaquin Miller has been ap pointed a member of the Forestry ommission by Governor Water man, of California. The governor probably thinks it is time Joaquin was taking to the woods. This makes three that have fallen off at that place lately, but Mrs. Sippy is probably worse than any of them. It seems strange that such a dangerous place is not re paired. W. H. Mitchell, manacer for the Mitchell & Lewis Co. of Portland, is in the city for the purpose of opening their branoh house in the new brick built bv Wm. Vance on Second street. The lifelike portraits of Mr. Earl Race and wife, of the St. Charles hotel, and the two little children of Mr. Harry Miller are specimens of the Pr f's skill in this line ; but his crowning eObrt is on exhibition in Black man's window this m rning (a lit tle child in its cradle). As an art ist the Professor stands at the head of the class. Monday evening the iadies of this city gave a donation to the family of John , Hall, presenting them with a big lot of goods, such as provisions, clothing, money, etc. Mrs. Putman returned home from Oregon City last week, bring ing with her Mr.Leabj-'s little boy, his mother having died from the effects of a surgical operation last week. Mrs. James Blakely is in very poor Health. Mrs. Zeiner's two little girls are down with the measles, but are improving. Mr. D. P. Bennett is confined to his bed by sickness, The steam sawmill is running again, cutting a lot of haidwood for the Oregon Frrniture Company of Portland. In addition to the attempted 1 burglary at the City meat market, an account of which was published in the Herald yesterday morning, burglars also raided tvo other meat markets the same night. those of John Dierenger and Broder Bros, -in the former they got the cash box, which contained but 75 cents and left it on the floor with 25 cents in it. A dog was tied inide, and it is supposed tho burglars were frightened away. At Broder Bros, market they failed to effect an entrance. The burglars did not seem to be hungry, as no meat was taken, not even a leg of mutton. John Wilson, the offender who was discovered by W. McLaughlin in the act of robbing a till and was caught by the officers, and who is now in jail awaiting the action of the grand jury, is supposed to have several confederates. The city officers are keeping a sharp look out and it will not be healthv for them to loiter about the city. Teachers' Imtlltuie. The teachers and friends of edu cation throughout Linn county are hereby notified that the teachers' institute for the third judical dis trict will be held, at McMinnville. beginning the 3i)th of April and continue through a three days' session. As this district includes Linn county, it is expected that a number of teachers from this county will be present. Every teacher should consider the importance of a good institute and should attend when it is in his power to do so.
