ACCOM- The legislature has made ecxwl selections in the election of ofiu-ers under the new laws passed. -They are: Railroad Commissioners J. P. Faul, of Baker; Geo. W. Colvig, of Douglas; Robert Clow, of Polk. Fish Commissioners F. C. Reed, K. P. Thompson, aud Campbell. Piolot Commissioners Captain J. A. Brewn, Captain L. Wilson' and A. Montgomery. Librarian J. B. Putman. Boatman Win Dench. The food commission is yet to be elected. The great millionaire Flood died in Headelberg, Germany on the 21st. inet. Of the great California quartet, Maxkay, Fair, Flood and O'Brien, two only survive. O'Brien died three or four years aso, and James C. Flood, the head of the firm of h lood & O'Brien. Sknatob Irvine's bill protecting railroad contractors and laborers lias been passed-as amended by the senate committee. Albany will have a street rail way system within three months. The Oregon legislature adjourned sine die at 10 o'clock last night. -This question, . though not im mediately pertinent, to our vicinity, is one of such broad significance and 'of Bttch growing frequency and spreading tendencies, that it is demanding consideration and thought. A calm and dispassionate view of the result will convince the thoughtful man that the good ac complished has never yet over balanced the suffering and evil produced. In the recent carmen's strike in Brooklyn and New York much distress was engendered, confusion p oduced, and t wo deaths caused. One was that of a man who, being out of employment, took a place lett vacant by the strike ; the other was one of the men on strike ,' who was one of a crowd that undertook to prevent a car from being run. - I K)l 1Mb' iv.ft . men themselves one Iwaped or fell f iy reiieve croup, whooping "c-ousrh and XEir TO-DAY. Is it incorrect to ascribe these deaths to the managers of the road when they were plainly the results of the strike itself. The Irish Werld says : In order : to- fix the responsibility, therefor, for the tragedies of the strike we must not, if we desire to be just,' allow our sympathies to attach all the Ilame upon the employers; who engaged 'new bands when old hands quit work, or upon the police authorities whose sworn duty it was to prevent obstruction of the streets and in terference with public traffic and to promptly suppress at any cost ' all open violations of the public peace.
