They Were Seized by the American Aithor'.tieg Two Yean Ag-A Canadian Sensation New York, Feb. 23. The news of the passage of the Nicaragua, bill was received with ranch satisfac tion at the office of the Nicaragua Uoinpanv, which has taken the contract ol constrncting the canal for the Maritime Canal Company of Nicar agua. A. representative of the former company said: "We will begin work aa soon as we can close the contract we have now and make other arrangements neces sary. There will be no diplomatic difficulties, as treaties have been concluded between the United States and Nicaragua and Costa Rica, allowing the construction mi the canal. The total distance from ocean to ocean at Nicaragua is 166 miles, of which fifty-six and a half is by lake, eighty-one and a half by river and basin navigation, leaving only twenty-eight miles of actual canal. The estimated total cost of the work by the suiveying expedition of 1885 was $50,000,000, and $15,000,000 for contingencies, making $65,000,000. Extracts from the report of the committee on the naval maneuvers in 1888 say that the main lesson is that Great Britain is far from being as strung as she should be on the high seas. While they believe the navy strong enough to engage any maritime power, thev are of the opinion that no time should be lost in placing it beyond comparison of the combined naval forces of any two countries. The United States war ship Monongnhela which left port yesterday, is under orders from the secretary of war to sail without delay for Samoa, and there to report to Admiral Kimberly, of the man-of-war Trenton, who is io command of the fleet. The Monongahela was formerly a steamer, bat has been changed into a sailing vessel, and the place where the engines were has been decked over and berths, etc, built. It ha? a bark rig; a gleam boiler aud a con denser have be:n !a;ed on the ship, and as Commander Wiugate says, the vessel is in first-class order. When there is a strong eastern wind the water is lowered considerably on the lAnieiicau shore of the island, so tnucn mat it is irequentiy possible to walk on the beach at least thirty feet from the ordinary water line. It is here on the beach that the oli relics have usually beeu fouud. Recently Farmer Webb was walk ing along the beach when he sudden ly came upon several dozen old cop per coins. They were partially buried in the sand in such a shape as to show conclusively that tney had been buried there. Many are so old and well worn that it is impossible to make out their date or design, tme of them is a medal bearing on one side of the inscription: "Success to the Commerce of Upper and Lower Canada" and on the other Bide the words, "Sir Isaac Brock Bart, the hro of Upper and Lower Canada, who fell at thy battle if Queens twn Heights Oct., 13. 1812." Some of them are American coins and have only the twelve stars. A society is soon to be formed among the Grand island people for the purpose of collecting and pre serving the many valuable relics of the island.
