No eubject can be mentioned that is of more -importance than the one of training the future rulers of this country the chil dren. The World says that at a recent meeting of the Soroais Society in New York city the relative advantages of English and Ameii an customs in .the training of children were discussed, and the decision was in favor of "the American plan." The vote was at least creditable to the patriotism of the Sorosisters. Anglomania in any of its forms that is, the dis .position to do a thing because rich nglish people do it is both con temptible and silly. We agree with Emerson in his admonition to "let the passion for America cast out the passiou for Europe." But to adopt anything foreign because it is better done than we do it is quite another matter. It will Htrike most unprejudiced observers of children iu England and in this country that a blending of the two systems of training might work to ihe advantage of each. The simpler iliet of English children especially the avoidance of too much sweets the early bedtime that is the rule ior them, the respect inculcated for their elders, and their subordina tion, in a measure, to the other members and interests of the hmiaotwihl xh features of that system which might well be more generally adopted here. On the other hand, the extent to which children of the wealthy classes in England and of their sycophantic imitators here are intrusted to hireling care and alien training is not a fashion to be commended, 'An American baby the heir to a crown of citizenship in this great and glorious republic ought to have an American training; and that should mean the best in the world, wherever it is copied from. It might be added that the best in the world is that which comes under the direct care of a sensible American mother. T.ie bank of Paris, it seems, ha? totally failed to float a new Panama ditch loan and pour o!d DeLesseps is doomed to 'complete failure in his last canal project. It is whispered that the prime cause of his failure is the' dishonest and profligate manner ;-in which the money was pent upon', the big ditch, the larger proportion of it being uselessly squandered. California papers sav tlat pottery clay has been found within the limits of the city of Vallejo, and intimate that in time the in dustry growing out of the discovery will cause that city to rival Tren ton. Before that time arrives some philanthopist ought to go east and instruct the people how- to pronounce the name of the ciiy built upon this valuable clay. The Illinois Springer seems to bs a decided failure as a state manufacturer. The schemes that he springs do not materialize worth a cent, indeed they seem to be clogs, rather than aids to the desired ends. Tiif.he seems to be a scarcity of sailors in San Francisco, several vessels being reported as unable to go to sea on that account. M.tKKIED. The case of the young farmer in Indiana, who arrayed himself in a sheet and attempted to frighten a darky by suddenly appearing in his path clothed in his ghostly apparel, and who was met by the co'.ored man's ax cleaving his ' head in twain, is a just ending of , the course of practical jokers who j Mttempt to laugh and grow fat over the misery and suffering of other iieople.
