In his eagerness he unmercifully overtaxed the slayts who worked there. A seer announced that for his cruelty he would not live to taste the wine from bis gthpea. On Christmas night an attempt was made to blcw up Bodajla's house with giant powder, but it failed. Bodayla got the Survlk blotters to stop with him, arfd that he was to leave this morning for San Francisco. A 4 :30 however, Shafford fired giant powder and utterly demolished tne bouse. The two Surylks aud a little girl were instantly killed. Bodayla was brought to Provi dence hospital to day, and is in a very bad coodition. The other tbree will probably rt cover. Shafford was found by the peo ple of Gilman at his own house after the explosion, evt-ry iodica tion pointing to him as the per petrator of the deed. He was placed uniHr arrest, and, later, up on the arrival ot the sheriff his cus tody was turned over to that oil! -cer. What May Be Told by the Liars af I tie Fucr, "It is customary to sav that wrinkles come from worrying, but the truth is that most of them come from laughing," says a well known physician. "To know how to laugh is just as important as to know when to do it. If you laugh with the sides of your fece, tne skin will work loose in time, and wrinkles will form in exact accor- t auce with the kind of a laugh you have. The man who always wears a smirk will have a series of semi circular wrinkles covering his cheeks. When a gambler who has beea accustomed to suppressing his feelings laughs, a deep line forms on each Bide ot bis noseband rune up to the upper corner of his mouth. In time this line extends to the chin and assumes the shape of a half-moon. A cadaverous person with wax like skin is very apt to have to broadly marked wrinkles, one running up from the jaw ana the other under the eye. These meet at right angles at the cheekbones and look as though they formed a knot at the apex. The scholar's wrinkles form oo his brow, while scheming politi cians ceme round bis eyv-s, where they look for all the world like the spokes of a wheel. The owner may tell us that it formerly oore abundant crops, but of late years the trees have "run out." Why iiave they "run out"? They form erly gave good crops of apples. All the other land on tbe farm was expected to give but one good crop, but this of the orchard was made to grye a crop of grain, or a crop of grass or clover, to be taken off as hay. The soil soon became tired of doing this double duty. The trees "cave out" because they were cobbed of food; the tiit thiniy they need is feeding. Ol course i; the soil needs draiuiug, lay t ho u-ctb'd tiies at ouce, or as soon as the soil will allow. Such orchards ae usually iu grass; draw on a iuavy dressing of manure and spread it, and, as the soil is iu prop r condition, turn over the sod aud manure with the p'ow; with the hot weather tbe sod will decay rapidly. When this is touud to be well rotted, give another plowing aud a deep one. If ashes cas be had, spread a heavy coating and Harrow; in the absence of ashes, irrow in a good dressing ot lime. If the trunk and larger branches r covere-j with loose scales of ol 1 bark upon which lichens and mosses have a tor t-hold, scrape oiT the loose bark, using a blunt hort bandied boe as a scraper. Then in a damp time or thaw wash tho trees with soft soap, made thin enough to apply with a brush. Use home-made soap, made with, I je or potash. That sold at the stores is usually merely hard soap mixed with water and very de ficient in strength and quite infer ior to the home-made. Mix the soap with enough water to work readily, go over the scraped por tions with it, and leave tbe spriLg raia to finish the work. In duo time the bark will be found beau tifully smooth and deprived of all foreign growth. Tbe soap baa been washed into tbe soil will act as a useful fertilizer' Long ne glected trees usually require pruDning, and this mutt depend upon the conditions of tbe tree. Never cut out a branch without reason for it. If the sod has be come crowded, cut out enongh branches to let light and air into the ceutei ; if grown one side, re move the branches needed to le store the balance. If large wounds are made, smof tb the sur face and paint them over with some darK-colop-d paint. Amcri- can Agriculturist for Jannary.
