Thomas Hoar had fought forty
two rounds with hare knuckles this
morning. The battle is said to
have been desperate. In the forty
second round Hoar was knocked

Married -On Jan. 6, 1889, by
Rev. R. Robe, at the residence of
Wm. McCaw, E. N. McCaw and
Miss Ida Murphy. The ceremony
was witnessed by a few of the near
relatives. The band boys turned
out this evening and seranaded the
happy couple with some of their
best music.
A basket sociable was held here
last Tuesday, which was a success
both socially and financially. The
receipts from the supper were
$36.45. The money was appropri
ated to the church, $26 was used to
finish paying for the organ and the
remainder for paying the janitor.
After supper the band played a few
pieces, a collection was taken up
lor tuem, amounting to $2.50. Mr.
Oscar Derrick sang some songB,
made a comic speech, etc., for
which the audience gave him $1.35.
The band boys have just received
a new lot of fine music, on which
they are practicing hard, as they
wish to get their share of the play
ing next summer.

Sbalford, a Bohemian fired a heavy
charge ot giant powder under the
house of Geo. Bodjyla at Gil man,
thirty tn:lea east of Seuttie at 4 :30
this morning, Instantly killing
John and Michael Survlk and a
nine-year-o'.d c'lild of Bodayla. and
badly wounding Bodayla, his wife
and their little son and daughter.
Last spring Bodayla caused the
arrest of Sbalford on a charge of
criminal assault to his wite. ahaf
ford was sentenced to a short-time

life of Bodayla and he was again
arrested and incarcerated injtil
for ninety days. On July 1st he
was released, and returned to Gil
man, and since then he has lost no
opportunity ot attempting to in
jure Bodayl", who naturally began
to fear greatly bis personal safety
and made arrangements to move to
San Francisco. On Christmas
night an attempt was made to blcw
up Bodajla's house with giant
powder, but it failed. Bodayla got
the Survlk blotters to stop with
him, arfd that he was to leave this
morning for San Francisco. A
4 :30 however, Shafford fired giant
powder and utterly demolished tne
bouse. The two Surylks aud a
little girl were instantly killed.
Bodayla was brought to Provi
dence hospital to day, and is in a
very bad coodition. The other
tbree will probably rt cover.
Shafford was found by the peo
ple of Gilman at his own house
after the explosion, evt-ry iodica
tion pointing to him as the per
petrator of the deed. He was
placed uniHr arrest, and, later, up
on the arrival ot the sheriff his cus
tody was turned over to that oil! -cer.
This afternoon wMle the sheriff
was at dinner, a crowd of fifty men
broke open the door ot the lioase
where Shafford was confined, took
him to a tree opposite the railroad
depot, and 6trung him ui, first
trying to induce him to confess.
He refused, and he was hanged
up. After thirty seconds he was
taken down, and given anather
chance to confess. Still declin
ing, be was ngain elevated and
cut down for the second time, after
forty seaonds. He was then very
weak, and the efforts to make him
divuige were still tiuitless, and he
was hanged for the third and last
time.

Secretary Whitney referred Repre
sentative Thompson's plans for a
coast defense vessel, yesterday
concluded its labors by agreeing to
report plans back to the secretary
recommending that they be adopt
ed. The vessel designated by
Thompson is ol the Monitor type.
It is of 3,000 tons burden and is
armed with one dynamite gun, two
ten-inch guns, two torpedo tubes
and one rapid firing gun. It will
have nine fet-t of free board with,
provisions for cuiBcient water bal

feet lower. Tbo speed of the ves
sel is seventeen knots. Members
of the board are of the opinion that
the design has great merits.

We often meet with an orchard
of apparently healthy trees, which
is practically fruitless. The owner
may tell us that it formerly oore
abundant crops, but of late years
the trees have "run out." Why
iiave they "run out"? They form
erly gave good crops of apples.
All the other land on tbe farm was
expected to give but one good
crop, but this of the orchard was
made to grye a crop of grain, or a
crop of grass or clover, to be taken
off as hay. The soil soon became
tired of doing this double duty.
The trees "cave out" because they

readily, go over the scraped por
