The railroad business of the country is the greatest factor in our growth and prosperity that exists in the country, it is also the means towards the dangerous and rapid centralization of the wealih of the country, and on this phase of the subject there is the greatest need for watchful legislation. A start in that direction has already been made, and it should be closely watched and judiciously followed up. Gen. Alexander, in giving the status of the interstate law says that the railroads of the country had largely iesorted to pools before the interstate commerce law for- bade them. The result of the law has generally been very advan tageous to the best lines, which under the pool, really paid a sort of blackmail to the pow er lines to maintain ratcp. If the penalties oi the law tari restrain such lines from rebating and under-billing, to be rid of the pool will be a great blessing to the well-located roads. If not, then the roads will be driven into consolidation, for the end of finhting will be bankruptcy undsale. Fortunately consolida tion has already gone so far in many sections of the country that the difficulties of abolishing rebates have been greatly reduced. And as far as it has gone it has proved of much advantage both to the public and to the stockholders. Fortunately, too, the other results attendant upon consolidation have been sufficiently d monstrated to remove any intelligent fear of extortion in rates or deterioration of service. Who would to-day desire to undo the consolidations which have built up the Pennsyl vania railroad or the New York Central, and call back to life the numberless small companies which preceded them ? The country has outgrown such service as they could render, and the local growth and development along the lines of these consolidated companies certainly indicate improved condi- ions. In this connection, too, the mprovement in cost and character In 1865 i of service is instructive the average rate per ton per mila on the principal Eastern lines was about 2.!)00 cents ; in 1887 it wasj 0.718 for a service twice as speedy and efficient. ! , . .... j TllE Chronicle thinks that if the ( R .ssian railroad across Silieria be uilt on the plans projected, it i lie plans W II do as much to transform Central Asia in the early part of the next century as the Pacific ; 11 1 ',1 I raiiroaus nave uone 10 iiecivt mc ,.o.VnJXnrtliu-it in fhi 1 country. The chief object of the new railroad is to capture the over- J land traffic that now comes from ; China anl Russia by caravan and I to enable Russia to extend her j dominions, as weu as to develop ( the rich provinces of Southern K""",v" " Siberia. Even the slow-moving ', . , , . . 1 .1 ; Russian has been struck with the necessity of railroads to develop outlying provinces, and the rapid conquest of Turkestan, which lias I , , - , v. m followed the building of the road i fmm th Oftsnian to Askahad. h 4 i shown tbe power of quick trans-! portation of troops. i The Brooklyn Bridge is no less i a marvel than it ever was, but it is now such a common place con venience that the people of the metropolis wonder how they ever . -i :i : i - nnn KOfc along WUliOUl 11. ovn .Ji,wv,- 000 nassenaers passed over the I ridze durini; the year endi Iecember 1st, os whom more o0,000,000 were railway passengei-s Not a single serious accident oe tarred on the railway. The bridge is J well policed, so that women cross alone at night without the slightest i annoyance. j From measure to we:?ht is fast; I rod.-.cts of the farm. The Press t'ii:ks that justice and fair dealing require that vegetables, fruit, berries, and even eggs, should be sold by weight just as meat is. As to the soundness of this proposition there can be no serious question ; but the Press thinks the adoption ol the proposed reform will come hard on those retail dealers who now reap such profits fiom "skimp ing" in the measure of vegetables and fruit. As an item in the shipping interests of the country it is said that the steamer Robilant is one of the largest cargo-carriers afloat, with a displacement of 5..035 tons, and a length of 382 feet. One day Ia6t week she 6teamed from New Orleans out into the Gulf and off for Liverpool, carrying the biggest cargo that ever left that port J ,n,.0Hl JUUSeu W valued at $600,000 and compo: of 5,082,283 pounds of cotton and 32,028 bushels of corn. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclusive ly that more persons die from diseases of the throat and lun;sthan any other. It is probable that everyone, without exception, receives vast rumbers of Tubeicle Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to eontinue their ravages they extend to the lungs pro ducing consumption and to the head, causing catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed ato proceed will in time cause death. At the onset you must act with promptness; allow ing a cold to go without attention is dangerous and may lose you your lite. As soon as you feel that some thing is wrong with your throat, lungs or nostrils, obtain a bottle of Boschee's I German Syrup. It will give you iin ! mediate relief. Worth Knowing. Mr. W. H, Morgan, merchant, Laka City Fla., was taken with a severe Cold: attended with a distressing Cough and running into Consumption in its first stages. He tried many so called popular cough remedies and steadily grew wors'j. Was reduced in flesh, and had difficulty in breathing and was unable to sleep. Fiualy tried Dr. King's New Discovery lor Consumption and found immediate rel.ef and after using a half dozen bottles found liimsilf well and has had no return of the disease. No other remedy can show so grand a record of cures as Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption Guaran teed to do just what is claimed for it.
