MUM WILL 410 TI1K riiOJMT 3y the Incorporation of a Co U pi try Co Oparate With A3t jr:a ia Cjt structiaa the 2nnoxi Liaa. An enthusiastic meeting zcua waw held last evening of cit i- in the otfice ot Stewart & Sox's hardware store for the purpose of organiz ng a company to co-ojerate with the Astoria & South Coast Hail way Co. in theWnstruction of the proposed railroaU line from Astoria to con nect with the Oregon Pacific at this city. The meeting was attended by uiauy of the most influential and wealth v citizens oi the. city, who had assembled with a determiua-! tion to take definite steps in the matter. S. E. Young was chosen chairman" oi the meeting and F. P. Nutting, secretary. .' Enthusiastic speeches were made by leading citizens, and communi cations were read from E. C. Hol den. secretary of the Astoria chamber of commerce, and from the citizens of Independence express ing a desire to join with Albany concerning the building of the pro mised road. In was decided that a company be incorporated at once for the purpose of co-operating with A.t..ri;i in biiildiii'' the road, and appointed to draw up articles of incorporation to be submitted at a subsequent meeting to be called by the chairman. The committee nainl was George K. Chamber lain, II. H. Hewitt. C. K. Woivei ton. H. Brvant and J. K. Weath ior 1. meeting to adopt the articles orporation will be held early week, after which tbe com- i& Ut will be dulv incorncrateu. t.te question of the const ruction ti lu. road is a most imnortant mm and it is "ratifying to know in. .t tlie matter has been takeii hold of in a manner calculated to lead it to a successful termination. it is tne purpose 01 me citizens 01 1 Albany to organize this com pany " to act conjoint iy with the Astoria ot Si.-uih C oast j Uailwav Co. for tbe speedy buildiuir cf this road, and as the citizens here mean business, and j have begun with a determination to build their end of the mad, and I as the people of Astoria have al-1 ready comrat need building on that end," it seems reasonably certain that the enterprise cannot but be successful. It is pro, osed to con- j nect with the Oregon racitic at the railroad bridge at this city, thus avoiding the extense of bridging the Willamette. I.ETTEK XOM .UN WCSTF.1LL. To Tim Ebitor or TIIK iiKRAI.li: Permit me, through tlie columns of your journal, to express my thanks to my white friends who have so nobly ministered to the wants of a large number of Chi nese laborers, who have been thrown out of employment by ton tractors on the Oregon Pacific rail road, and who are now iu your midst iu the city of Albany with out means ; and who, but for your noble Christian liberality, would have sutlered with hunger. It isi not the fault of the Chinese labor- i ers that they are here. They car 9 under contract to work for one j year, and, instead, before ending! one month's service, they are dis-1 charged without cause or provoca-! tio'i. The people of this t ily are not chargeable with the blame of' bringing sunt Cnine.-e here, aad are not legally bound to contribute to their support because they are here, but a Christian community cannot allow fellow mortals to suf fer for food in their midst, and they have responded nobly to the 1 demand made upon them, and my liu.iff ia tillkrl u-irli irriiritiifh fur t this manifestation of their kind-' ness, and I would say that to avoid being longer burdened it would be better and cheajierto pay the sum of $2.00 per head to the O. P. K. K. company and have saitl Chinese sent to San Francis co. The company oiler to take them for that sum, and it will be much cheaper than to furnish food for them, and it is utterly im possible to procure work for them. The contractors ought to pay for transporting these men to San Francisco, but they will not do so, nor will thev furnish employment for them. " I attich no blame toj the railroad company. Jim Wkstfali.. Notable Dead. Henry Avery, the prominent nurseryman of Burlington, Iowa, from whose stock the nursery of A. Pools had sold at the Holton the previous evening for even money, but upon the grounds, Loveland's backers forced Cam eron down to $10 to $7 50 and then $10 to $5. Something like $1200 was staked on the event. The race was called at 3 o'clock, and both mei. got well awav to gether, making an even thing of it j for the fiibt 00 yards, when Love land made a spurt which lie j increased, easily maintaining his 1 lead.
