The First Installment of the Winter Ship ments to San Francisco Markets. L. Senders, of this city, who has been engaged in shipping to Cali fornia large numbers of horses, shipped yesterday anottier lot of lf head of large draft horses. The Oreuonian, referring to the ship ment, says : "They will be at once taken aboard the State of Califor nia, where stalls nave been pre pared for them. "This is the first installment of the winter's exportation of horses or me aiuorma markets, it is tor the stated by local horse breeders that more favorable rates have been ob tainable by that route, though an impression prevails that this is no longer the case. The increase of Oregon's annual breeding of horses is much more than keeping pace with the local demand. Kach succeeding year betters the quality and enlarges the number of our marketable horses. The exhibits at the recent fat stock show, but more particularly the aggregation here of highly" b-e;l horses at the fall race meeting, lias demonstrated beyond any question the important position which Oregon is acquiring in this industry. The board of county commis sioners have negotiated a loan of $2000 from the First National Bank of this city, for the purpose of rais ing the necessary funds for the running expenses of the county until the taxes are collected, the treasury now being empty. In this connection it might be interesting to refer to the manner in which some of the county funds have been spent. The board of commissioners have just ordered paid an attorney fee of $")0 to J. J. A short time ago Albany was af flicted with an abundance of worth less, thieving tramps, and it seem ed a difficult problem to rid the city of them, but a little vigorous treatment at the hands of tha city authorities seems to have settled the matter and they trouble no more. Several of them were put to work on the streets wth a bail and chain, one or two were sent to he penitentiary, and one of the policemen armed himself with a big pistol as long as his arm and when some retractory tramp re fused to capitulate, lie took a shot at him. The tramps have conclud ed that Albany is no longer a good square meal at a restaurant at tue city's expense w'thout work, and they stick to the ties or the brake beam and pass on. Alxinl M reel i ICa i 1 way . Several months ago a company was organized in this city to con struct and operate a street railway in this city. The company was in corporated and was duly granted a franchise from the city, but the railway has failed to materialize. In the meantime Salem has secured a street raiLvay and Albany has taken a back seat in this respect. Astoria also has a system of street railway. Albany is large enough to support this kind of a metro politan convenience, and some enterprising men will some day t:ike the matter in hand, and make a fine thing of i . Syrians Aci-idfiil.
