Afllilavits nl Strikers crerutius a Tile tainpain blander. Indianapolis, Oct 31. James N. Huston chairman of the Re publican State Committee, Iiks prepared h complete history of the "one dollar a day ' campaign ne started and actively circulated by the Democrats against General Harrison. The lie first appeared immediately after the Chicago Convention, and was published by the Sentinel, the Democratic organ in Indianapolis. This was met by a challenge from the Indianapolis Journal, the leading Republican paper of Indiana, offering $1,000 JfoOfoe ,ur.oot.tbat General . Harri son ever made that remark or an other of the same tenor. A check for $2,000 was Sv;nt to William H. English, once Democratic candi date for Vice President, and to Joseph E. McDonald, a Demo cratic ex Senator, to hold until the testimony was examined. Both re fused the trust. The next step in the circulation of the lie Avas the statement of one Edward F. Gould that he heart General Harrison ment. This was affidavit from one make the state followed by an Schwartz reiter- atiug the lie. This wa3 followed bv a flood of affidavits from railroad men en gaged in the strike which is al leged to have caused the remark, in which the lie was conclusively, emphatically and irrefutably made denying its truth. Among the affidavits is one of Patrick H. Jameson, who was at the meeting addressed by General Harrison at that time. Jameson 6wears that General Harrison said then that he did not believe the men were get ting enougb pay but talked to them yery kindly and hoped jus tice would be done them. This affidavit was supported by others. It. S. Foster, Joseph It. Peery and Fred Kneiffer, all of whom declare positively that no such statement twas made. John T. Pressly, who was Sheriff" of Marion county during the strike and for fourteen years previous to that time a fireman and engineer on the Bee Liue railroad and a prominent, member of the brother jiOQ'J, swen.r? that General Harri son always expiesseu himself in favor oi higher wages for work iuymen. W. I. Lokue, Hemy McPetk, Alpheus Knight. Thomas W. Christain. William S. Elliot and others, a'i strickers, empha tically deny that General Harrison ever used the. expression. The most complete refutation is, however, a declaration by Gould himself, who tcld John li. Robin sou, Albert Hoffman, John A. CiiUlter, Silas II. Brattuin, John It. Beliis and David E. Williams, ail of whom swear to it, that he never heard General llarruoti make the statement attributed to him. BttliiF MENTION. French keeps railroad time. Boys kilt suits at W. F. Read s. Nearly a lliinilrec Allanlie steamers Mini, in 1 1 fly Tei.rs. Harper's Weekly. From the uate of the disappear- nnce ot tne Hi iateu jrresiaens dowD to the sinking of the Geiser tl other day. the annals of At lantic travel are mavked thickly with episodes oi uisaster, sunering and death. Some of the finest and stauuehest steamships that have ever been built figure on the long sad roll of the lost. Some of them have betn run down and sunk in a collision, like the Arctic, the Ville du Havre and the Geiser; . others have been destroyed by fire, like the Amazon, the Sheridan and , , the iAustia; "many have "rusTiett5'" headlong on the rocks in a log or a dark mght, like the Schuler, the Mosei and the Atlaut c; a few have foundertd at sea in a gale or a cyclone, like ti e Oity of Vera Cruz; others have been wrecked on sun lieu ice, like the Canadian, while several, like the President, Pacific and the magnificent City of Boston, have mysteriously disap peared leaving not a trace behind to indicate the cause of their loss. It is certainly a startling fact that in the space of forty-seven years since the unfortunate Presi dent left New York, March 11, 1S4I, never again to appear to mortal ken. nearly a hundred fine steamers have been utterly des troyed while on their passage across the Atlantic. Of these eight after leaving port mysteriously disappeared and have never since been heard of , ten were run down in collisions, five were burned, one ran on sunken ice in the Straits of Belle Isle, another went down in a field of ice, three foundered in mid-ccean, and the remainder of the melancholy list were those of America or on island rotks ff them ' Fully ten f these ran in foggy weather on the shores of Nova Scotia cr New Foundland on their way westward a sufficient warn ing, it might be supposed, to cap tains to give a wide berth to thse iatituaes. Only one, the xOWa,, an American steamer. VraS wreck eu on the French coast, Lear Cher- . bourg, ill 1S64. It is generally supposed that shipwrecks are caused by the rage . Of ihe elements, but of all the ves sels that went ashore only three or lour appear to have directly suffer ed in consequence of heavy weather. Miscalculations as to distances run and course steered clouded skies, dark nights and, moie than all, dense fogs, were the primary causes of the disasters. Comparatively few of these shipwrecks occurred without ser ious loss of life, a.t least 5000 per' sous lining pGiisued among !L'e passengers and crew who were on board. When the Atlantic was wiecked ou Meagher's Head, off the laial Nova Scotian coast, in 1873, no les than 5G2 persons were drowned. With the City of Glasgow 480 people disappeared: with the President, 120; with thrf Pacific, 186, and wit i the Ciy of Boston, the la'jt of the missing steamships, 191. When the Aus tria was burned in mid ocean 41) ' hves were lost; with the Arcia., 323; with the Anglo-Saxon, 372; with the Ville du Harve, 22 ; with the Borussia, 200: with the Schiller 311. The destruction of other Tes sels caused the loss of fewer lives than the vessels named, as happily fewer passengers were ou board ; but with several on the list from 100 to 200 beings perished. In 1873 no less than six large steam ships were wrecked, run down, or disappeared, the most disastrous losses being those of the Atlantic and the Ville du Havre a total of 788 lives. Mothers Bead.
