l'hillips, aged 20, was murdered en
the street, the . was .standing
watching the pkrade, when a man

and pulling the trigger, said:

the sidewalk with a ballet in hei
head, and died a few minutes later.
The murderei, who escaped, is a
man named GallowaA-. Thb cause
of the shooting is unknown.

St. Petersburg, Oct. 31. The
official statement regarging the ac
cident to the czar's train on Mon
day is as follows : The train con
taining the czar and czarina and
suite left Trano;-ka at noon Monday
and while passing through a deep
gorge near Iierke the train left the
rails. At the time of the accident
the czar and czarina were in the
saloon carrage at breakfast.
When the lirst carriage left the
track the rest of the train oscil
lated, causing the succeeding car
riage to keel over. The saloon
carriage, although remaining on
the track, was badly shattered and
the r.c.if fell in but rested on a por
tion of the sides, forming a shield
for the occupants. It seems in
credible that any of the occupants
of the train should have escaped
unhurt, but t.Jod protected the

were attacked by robbers and two
of the travelers were murdered and
robbed. The robbers escaped into
the mountains.

Later advices of the Arctic
whaling fleet states that the thir
teen whaling vessels reported
frozen in in the Arctic ocean are
fifteen miles south from Herald
island instead of twenty miles
north as before reported. Some
hopes are entertained of rescuing
the vessels.
A Comet Discovered
Mount Hamilton (Cal.), Oct 31.
A faint comet, with a nucleus
and a tail, was discovered by Mr.
Barnard at the Lick observatory at
8 o'clock this morning. Its posi
tion was It. A. nine hours and forty
six minutes, south delineation,
fifteen degrees and twenty-two sec
onds northwest.

the Sentinel, the Democratic organ
in Indianapolis. This was met by
a challenge from the Indianapolis
Journal, the leading Republican
paper of Indiana, offering $1,000

that time. Jameson 6wears that
General Harrison said then that he
did not believe the men were get
ting enougb pay but talked to
them yery kindly and hoped jus
tice would be done them. This
affidavit was supported by others.
It. S. Foster, Joseph It. Peery and
Fred Kneiffer, all of whom declare
positively that no such statement
twas made.

It is generally supposed that
shipwrecks are caused by the rage .
Of ihe elements, but of all the ves
sels that went ashore only three or
lour appear to have directly suffer
ed in consequence of heavy
weather. Miscalculations as to
distances run and course steered
clouded skies, dark nights and,
moie than all, dense fogs, were the
primary causes of the disasters.
Comparatively few of these
shipwrecks occurred without ser
ious loss of life, a.t least 5000 per'

passengers and crew who were on
board. When the Atlantic was
wiecked ou Meagher's Head, off
the laial Nova Scotian coast, in
1873, no les than 5G2 persons
were drowned. With the City of
Glasgow 480 people disappeared:
with the President, 120; with thrf
Pacific, 186, and wit i the Ciy of
Boston, the la'jt of the missing
steamships, 191. When the Aus
tria was burned in mid ocean 41) '

323; with the Anglo-Saxon, 372;

311. The destruction of other Tes
sels caused the loss of fewer lives
than the vessels named, as happily
fewer passengers were ou board ;
but with several on the list from
100 to 200 beings perished. In
1873 no less than six large steam
ships were wrecked, run down, or
disappeared, the most disastrous
losses being those of the Atlantic
and the Ville du Havre a total of
788 lives.
