Calm. co6l, dispassionate reason ing is the resource of every think ing man when matters of importance are to be decided. The question of the political complexion of the country for the next four years is one that forms a matter of personal importance to every citizen," and calls for prompt and decisive action, and how important thkt the action should be guided by that degree of reasoning re ferred to in the commencement of this article. How important that we should reason together without heat, without prejudice and with a full and clear understanding of the situation. Democratic leaders, speakers and writers have been telling us that we are suffering under a burdensome tax. called the tariff; that every consumer of articles of foreign manufacture that is brought to tiiis country, and pays a duty for. entrance, pays as much more for the articles as the tariff that is collected upon it and that this is a tax upon the con sumer. Statistics and price lists hjive been repeatedly published to show the utter fallacy of this claim, and that in reality the home lAanufacture of the articles brings into competition the home with t le foreign products, making the price of the article cheaper than it would be without the tariff and with the home competition re mpved. Yet the claim is kept up and reiterated simply because these same leaders, writers and speakers believe they can influence men to act in their favor in vo'.ing the way they desire to have tl.eni Vote, by raising a prejudice on the cry of taxation. These claimants in their own estimation fortify their position by saying that heme manufacturers can compete with foreign rivals, but they stultify themselves on this ground by re taining the tariff on manufactured mrticles but remove it from raw materials, thus removing all pro tection from the farmer and humble producer of the North, while they .still protect the ones they call the wealthy manufacturer who is able so they say to successfully with stand all foreign rivalry. I The question is simply shall we spend our money at home or send 1 abroad ; shall we protect our home workmen who bear the burden of our governmental ex- You haven't',? Well let us tell you that by buying a cheap throwing a And we Come SPECIALTY and WARRANT EVERY j pense and in the magnificent development o our country, or shall we protect the foreign pro ducer who cares only for our money and, if his wares are admitted free, contrihutes not one farthing to wards the expense of our govern ment, while he shares in its advantages. That is the whole s:im and sulistan. e of the situation. Just take and view it oyer and over, weigh carefully, with unpre judiced mind, all the facts in con nection with it, and you can see it in no other light; and can there he a single question as to which side of the fence the patriotic and self interested American citizen's vote will be cast upon next Tues day ? Claps Spreckle's big sugar refinery had its corner stone laid with great ceremony recently in Philadelphia. A magnificent col lation was spread afterward. The suar king, who has his fingers in every persons bowl o; sugar in the country could well afford to spread a fine collation. Poor Lord Sackville West is just now the most talked of man in the nation, and he does not owe this immense publicity to any brilliant feat3 he has exhibited in his liter ary work either. The telegraph wires are respon sible for the statement that 21 women in Boston recently nomin ated Miss Alice S. Stockton as candidate for governor of the state of Massachusetts. New Bedford Mass., can boast of an earthquake which recently shook 'em up in that region. After this week the occupation of the campaign orators will be gone. National Surgical Institute.
