The methods adopted by the leaders of the syndicates and trusts, in many instances bring their own destruction. Tue Baltimore Hun says on this subject that every dealer in the article knows that the tin syndicate has gone to smash. But the copper syndicate, French in its origin, and engineer ,od by A. Secretan, still flourishes, jlle still holds a call upon a very large proportion of the world's pro duction, and thus far has carried up prices at his will, paying more than the; average price u the copper-mining corporations and Sharing with them a certain por tion of the additional profits. But the laws of trade are beginning to tell on the syndicate. It has forced the world to buy copoer at a purely artificial and inflated value, and the consequence i- that the consumption of copper has been materially reduced, stocks are accumulating and production it increasing. As the syndicate is compelled to take all the copper tnat is produced, the financial strain in carrying so much without finding a market for it is getting to be felt. The corner in copper may ot break down immediately, but o realize on the constantly increas ing stock on hand, the syndicate will have to lower its prices, and when this occurs the beginning o the end will not be far ott. Con sumers of copper have only to restrict their orders for a litth time longer, and the syndicate will breakdown from overweight. In any event, let the collapse come when it may, it has been making large profit? while the squeeze lasted. But other trusts can no' be controlled as easily as the lit and copper trusts can, and othei trusts cause more wrong ami hardships upon the working people. Legislation should stretch forth iu .strong arm and regulate such mat ters so that innocent parties should not be caused to suffer. P. T. Barni:m shows his appre ciation of protection to American industries, by ottering his entire real estate in Bridgeford, Connecti c ut, at 25 per cent less than valua tion in case Cleveland is elected president. He says that he con siders the change in the policy of the government, in that event, j would depreciate the value of the property fully to that extent. .T Vffli Tin vfiTi't'? Well let us tell vou that bv buvine a cheat) throwing a And we SPECIALTY and WARRANT EVERY EDI TOR A L NOTES. The time for making a decision which way this government of outs is to be run for the next four years is Jna? rowed down to a very few lays, and every voter in the land is responsible for the result. The question is not to be decided upon the personal niprits of the two candidates for president, for if it was there would be short work in making the decision personal matter.j have been dropped in the present canvass, and the question is to the material future growth and prosperity of the country. It all hinges upon t he simple pro position of whether we will work for our own benefit and interests, or will rather seek to enhance the benefit and interests of foreign countries by buying their products, spending our money in their markets in prefer nee to spending it in our own, building up the factories of tiie old world instead of supporting our own, giving em ployment to a foreign laborer instead of supporting our own people by creating manufacturing enterprises for them to engage in. This is the question in a nutshell, that the voter must decide before next Tuesday, Yesterday's Portland papers mentioned the fact that a lady had b -m assaulted by a savage dog upon the street of that city and her dress ruined, and she frightened though not physically injured. The policeman summoned to the spot hunted up the owner of the canine and notified him to end the dogs life. The query naturally arises, why tiie delay. A dog of that description should have his capacity for doing damage ended at once with out anv ifs or ands about it. The old Bailey police court in London was recently the scene of the sentence to live years penal servitude, for forgery, of a woman said to rival the famous Mrs. Langtry in personal beauty and at tractions. Mrs. Gordon Baylie was the name of the lady and a remarkably romantic and advau turers life is said to have been crowded into her MO vears. It is thought that President Cleveland will nut issue his thanks giving proclamation until after Nov. (, so that he can see whether he will have anything to be thank ful for. QR i:t. G.
