The Lebanon Ex press learns from Silas Ban-, who came from the Mo Kinnon rancli, two miles above Lower Soda, that Henry McDowell and his sister, Mrs. James Caty, and her little hoy, met with a -evere accident on "the grade three nii'.es beyond MeKinnou's Tuesday noon. Mr. McDowell and h;s sif ter, with two or three o'J her chil dren, had started to Harney valley in company with John liarr, and and Silas barr was go g to as.bl them to the top of Sand mounta'i. When thev reached the above-mentioned grade, Mr. McDowell's wagon overturned and the horses ran away and the patties were thrown from the wagon. Mrs. Caty was nml very badly ;i the back, and her little boy's head was badly bruised, also one arm hurt. Mr. McDowell's face was badly disfigured ; the flesh was torn from the lower edge oi his lorehead at the end of his nose across his fore head into his hair, making a circle over his left eye, and the flesh tell down over h's eye. A Verdict Krurlieii : la t. The jury in the case oi Cohn it Bn :., oi Portland, vs. M. Peyser, in change of venue from Linn count-, returned a verdict this morninir in favor of the Northwr-'t Fire auu Maiine Insurance com pany. The suit is a rather com plicat d one and has excited much interest. Cohn & Bros, sued t-i recover $1800, which they allege was due them from Peyser Decem ber 27th, last, when his saloon in Albany was burned. Peyser had his salcon bisured, they said for $1500 and sought to recover this, but the insurance company held that the indebtedness was fictitious and that Peyser had himself been instrumental in having the saloon destroyed. After a tedious trial the jury returned a verdict in favor of the insurance company. Sa'em Journal. A a Active tight Began. The Southern Pacific Company has begun an active fight against the Northern Pacific and Oregon Short Line for the passenger busi ness to the Ei?st. Uj to the pres ent time the Short Line has se cured a very large ercentage of the business, its rates being equal to those of the other routes. The Southern Pacific gets a very short haul on the business as it stand, canying the passengers only to Portland. It is now proposed to turn the tide of east bound travel southward through California, and to accomplish tins the Southern Pacific has placed coupon tickets to ail eastern points at different points along the line of the Oregon iSc California line in Oregon, among them being Portland, Salem, Al bany, Eugene, Roseburg, Ashland ! and Med ford. News. iu-.itl t' xty I oimuI. A man's body was found floating in the Yamhill river, a half mile above McMinnville, Wednesday morning. The coroner summoned a jury and held an inquest when the remains were taken from the water. The deceased was un known. He was about ;.!( years of age, ana would weigh about lo0 pounds; wore brown clothes; had a mustache, but no beard; was slightly bahtheaded ; five feet six inches high; moderately well dressed. It is supposed by some to be the body of James Cain, of Sheiidan It had been in the j water about two weeks. Violated the FishiiiK Laws, James Williams, canneryman at Oysterville, has been fined" $30 and costs for leaving his tish trap open on Sundays. The case was tried before the justice of the peace at . Smith returned a verdict of not guilty after being out 30 minutes.
