The fees were disallowed by the old board of county commissioners, which led to the suit, which will cost the county much more than it would to have paid the same in the first instance. Howard, who has been down on the Siuslaw, arrived in this city to inform Mr. H. B. Keniston of the death of his wife by drowning, which occurred the day before. She was about five miles below the head of tide on the .iuslaw, and went across the river in a boat to milk the cow. She was found near the place where she had in tended to land, with her clothes caught on some bushes and the body hanging in the water. The family had moved there only a few weeks ago, but Mr. Kenniston had not yet gone down. Besides her husband she lea .-es two or three small children and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. ! mlileu lriilli. The little three year old daughter ot Mrs. Clara uaviuson. died very suddenly in Lebanon on Wednes-J day. .Mrs. Davidson is a daughter of C. B. Montague, and recently arrived with her husband and family from California. County clerk, E. E. Montague, received a telegram telling of the sad event, and went out on the evening train. It was announced that the proposed connection with the Oregon Pacific would be at Albany, but now comes Salem with a re quest that it be built to that place and connect at some point on the Santiam. A committee lrom the Salem Board of Trade has been ap pointed to confer with the Astoria people concerning it, and the citi zens of the capital city are en thusiastic over the matter.
