Davis, formerly pas tor of the Evangelical church in this city, stated to a IIehu.j re porter yesterday that he would !ave f'-'r Pennsylvania in a few days, for the purpose of bringing out a colony to locale on the bottom lands aloiiv the Santiam river, i:i what is known as the "Greenhorn"' country above Sweet Home. Mr. Davis has been correspond in,: in ictciviR-e to tne mailer, and wnl go to Elvira, Union county, Pennsylvania, where he will re main uuiiiiii the winter, arranging lor the departure of the coiony in -j phi next, lie expects about 40 or 50 families to join the coiony, which number can readily find homes and good land in the dis trict named. The land is yet un surveyed, and has valuable' timber upon it. Mr. Davis stace.s tiiat U is their intention to erect a fur niture tactory and a saw-mill and convert some of the timber into a marketable product. Ricti coal deposits have been discovered near the proposed loca tion of the colony," and it is ex pected when a settlement of these lain Hies is effected to direct some attention toward the development of this coal. This is but another step toward the development of the resources of the wild lands in the eastern j oition of L;-in county, which abound in wealth for tiie stock raiser, the lumberman and the miner, and which are steadily being settled by home seekers from the East and eisewhere. Buyiux I P Timber Lands. Considerable activity is displayed in Astoria in tiling on timber land. Large quantities are being liled on in 100-acre tracts at $2 50 an acre on ootli sides of the nvr. A Michigan syndicate, worth, it is said, $12,000,00 ), are buying up an entire township, T. 7 N K. 7 W., oacK oi ivnappa, retting all thev can from purchasers who have se cured a patent from the govern ment. Just whether they intend to build a $150,000 sawmill or gob ble all there is in sight and hold it for the next twenty years is not at present known. This combina tion ot Micnigan cauitalitss is also getting hold of all the timber land they can get a clear title to back of Knappa. Some of the timber land is a wonder, many 100 acre tracts having 10,000,000 feet on each of i them. lhe syndicate is geting bonds for deeds for sixtv days from many of the ow ners "of 100 acre tracts. Ten dollars an acre is reported to be the ruling price, though $25 in some cases is the asking figure. Tbe .Salmon Itnu. The run of salmon is reported to be somewhat better of late upon the Alsea, and the canneries and fishermen are doing a lively busi ness. Upon laquina Bay the run is also fairly good at the present time, although there are so many boats employed in the business that the hauls made are unsually small. It is reported on good authority that nearly one hundred and twenty boats are now fishing, many of which carry very large nets. The salmon that runs the gauntlet and gets to the spawning ground this year is a very lucky tish. The canneries are reported I viuwg a luiiij goou ousiness tnojgn lew ooats are maKing any money, some of them scarcely pay ing expenses. Newport News. The Presbytery of Oregon. A correspondent writing from Newport, Ya, inina Pay, desires to knew how much money was ap propriated for the government work at that place. He says the statement has been made several times in the newspapers and in reports, that the sum appropriated is $50,000. The writer says : People here remembered with gratitude the active service of lion. Binger Hermann in securing a re c immendation for $120,000, and that through the earnest and ap preciated efforts of Hons. J. N, Dolph and J. H. Mitchell, this sum was increased in the senate to $150,000. Now, was tins amount reduced ? For the information of the cor respondent it can be stated that the amount appropriated for the improvement of Yaquina Bav is $150,000. Oregon ian. The Willamette Paekiu;; Company. The canning season at the Wil lamette Packing Co's. cannerv closed yesterday. They have can ned this season 100 tons of fruit and vegetables.or about 4000 cases. The market for the principal por tion of this is found in Portland, except what they retain for retail trade at their store in this city. The establishment has gained "a reputation for the excellence of their canned goods and are build ing up a thriving industry, whick merits success. A Hose Tomato Plant. Wm. McLaughlin has in the rear of his tailor shop a tomato vine that amounts to almost a tree. It is twelve feet high and was planted on June 10. It has about two bushels of tomatoes upon it and is still blooming. As a speci men tomato plant it certainly is entitled to the broom. Mr. "Mc Laughlin calls it his " Irish thistle." SerienHly Hnrl; The Lebanon Ex press savs that Ore Thompson was severely hurt last Tuesday while working w ith the steam wood saw. A crooked vine-maple stick was caught bv the saw and thrown with great force, striking him down and cutting a gash clear through, and broke a couple of his teeth. O. A . Traffic. The reports show that the O. & C. road has been run at a loss for the year ending Sept. 1. It is said the Southern Pacific company expected a loss for a year or two, to be followed by its becoming one of its best paying lines upon the complete settlement of Oregon. Moving Kij-ht Forward. Rails have niw been laid twenty-eight miles east of Albany on the Oregon Pacific. The con tract was let Monday for building the tunnel, which will be worked during the winter. It is thought that fifty miles of rails will be laid down east of Albany before work ceases. More Old Coins. Since tin Herald's mention of rare coins several old coins of interest have been dug up. Tiie Corvaliis Gzeite says: A representative of the Gazette wan dered down to where the Oregon Pacific steamboats, the N. S. Bea tiy and tiie Wm. Hoag, are tied u,. nud on looking around caught an item something like this: The Bently has had her engines thor ougly overhauled, clcaocd and re paired, and together with the boil er have been encased with a prep aration of asoestoss with wood covering and paint over it;thi ieads to confine alt the heat to the boiler and kteps the upper deck much cooler than without it. The whole boat from flagstaff to the Tery end ot the wheel has received two coats of paint; the ceding of the first deck being paiuted a beau tiful light blue: the cabins are ail repainted and at present a grxiner is at work on the fine woodwork. On the lloag the engines have uudergoue a general cleaning and repain'ing; a new wheel has been built to propel the steamer with and every piece cf woodwork h; s 1 oeen repainted. Engineer Al. McCully, together with Mechanic Williamson, is busily engagei! in "corking" the hull, which, when finished, will be repainted. Ex tra bracing and hog chains have been put in, and it is said that the Hoag will be the stirfest ruauiug boat that has been on the Wiliaai ette. All the paintwork, except ing the graining, has been done by Guy Powers aud H. L. Hatch, and they are ''dandies" iu the business. These two steamers when they start on tne winter run will be complete in every parfcular and there will not be a boat on the up per Wihamette that can "walk away'' for them . It is to be hoped that the government officials who have chaise of the river and har bor improvements will hurry up and get to work on the upper Wil lamettee and yauk out a number ot snags, stumps and e:c, that look so ugly to all steam boat meD, and, also, tnat they will do something soon to the riyer near this nlaec, for if they fail to attend to it Cor valiis wiil be left out completely as far as the river is concerned.
