Hazzard, engineer ot the othce.
The coramiioner has inspected
the Union and Central Pacific and
all roads in California and Oregon
connected with the latter, and
those in Washington territory.
'These roads," the commissioner
says, "are all in a very satisfactory
condition. They were well built orig
inally ;;n ! have been kept in excel
lent order sir.ee. Steel rails have
been substituted for iron almost
everywhere.

intending to finish the battle with

a serious wreck at Koutz, Ind., on
the Chicago and Atlantic railroad

are reported killed. It is impossi
ble to get the official statement.

were convicted yesterday of aiding
and betting on a prize fight on

tenced. Spahn got five and a half
months in the penitentiary and La
Blanche three.

Washington, Oct. 3. The re
publican tariff bill was reported to
the senate from the finance com
mittee to-dav.
The tobacco tax on producers
and dealers is repealed, and also
all laws regulating the manufact
ure, sale and exportation of to
bacco. Cigarettes weighing more than
three pounds to the thousand are
taxed one and a half dollais a
thousand, and those weighing less
than three pounds to the thousand,
fifty cents a thousand.
Alcohol for use in the industrial
arts is exempted from tax.
Tin plates are taxed one cent a
pound.
The lumber tariff is unchanged.
The duty on sugars is reduced
about fifty per cent.
The tobacco import tax is un
changed, as also is the tax on dates,
grapes, plums, prunes, raisins,
figs and salt.
The woolen schedule is exten
sively changed in classification
and in ra'ns.
Changes- in cotton and silk are
not material.
Carpets are unchanged.
Among the articles on the free
list are jute butts, sisal grass,
fruits not otherwise provided for,
and guano manures.
The importation of opium con
taining less than nine per cent, of
morphia and ojiium prepared for
smoking is prohibited entirely.
Various other reductions are
made.
It is estimated that the total re
duction of the revenue will be
about seventy-five million dollars,
as follows : Sugar, twenty-eight
millions; free list, six and a half
millions; tobacco (internal "tax;,
twenty-four and a half millions;
alcoiiol in the arts, seven and a
half millions; other reductions,,
eight and a half millions.

We make the following extracts
from a private letter from II. E.
Hayes, Master of Oregon State
Grange, under date of South Deer
field, Mass., Septembet 29:
We arrived here about one week
ag..-, alter a very pleasant trip
across the Continent. We stopped

ern New Yoi k. The farmers pay
tiie factory 1)4 cents ptr pound
for making: tin- cheese; the cheese
i average about o'.) pounds each, and
! s nie of the farmers told me that
they could not make a living if it
wis not forttlieir cheese interests,
but it rained there, and is raining
here(so there is no danger of my
webs becoming injured). I find
that in this state, especialy n this
locality the prevailing crops are
onions, tobacco and corn, the en
silage corn is raised quite exten
sively. I visited Mr. Ilaskib'a
farm on the Connecticut riyer last
wek, he was filling his silos, the.
corn is cut by steam power and
run by an elevator into the silos.
The sides of the silos is a double
plank, .with paper between tbe
plank, they then tramp the corn
down tight and nut a cover over it
with a light weight upon the
cover. The farmers have to fer
tilize the crop in order to raise any
amount. We visited tbe Agricul
tural school at Amherest; tbe
grounds contain about 380 acres
well watered and very handsomely
located. President H. H. Goodill
regreted that he did not see Prof.
Arnold when he was here. I was
very much interested in the man
ner the school is conducted. The
stables are quite extensive and I
noticed some fine stock of different
classes. I noticed a fine Ayrshire
shorthorn and Jersey herd. I am
satisfied that our College will re
quire a 200 acre farm in order to
make it of any practical Uoe, and
the more practical instructions we
can give the student the butter,for
one reason the student that want3
to become a lawyer, doctor or mer
chant will not relish that kind of a
school, but the farmer wili. We
also visited Memorial Hall in
Deerfield, there the mind can trace'
the advance of our country for near
300 years. Tomorrow we attend
the fair, and then go to Connecti
