What the "West Sbcre" Has to Say of i'l .ny and Sui co::d:ng Country. The prosperous growth nf Linn county, Oreaon. and esneriallv of ! its chief city, Albany, is no mys ; tery. The cause?- are apparent to j anyone who for a moment considers ! the location and natire of ti e country ami the character -t its people. Rich resources and favor able location will not alone make a country productive. It requires the labor and injienuitv of enter prising peoi.le to bring" out the wealth of the land and to estab lish for it a place in the commercial world. The union of these elements and their harmonious operation have brought Linn county to the front in industrial matters, and attracted to it the attention which it justly merits. The agricultural interests of the county are most important. These include grain and fruit raising and the production of wool and live stock, with such other incidentals as these would naturally suggest and make profitable. So large a part of the area of Linn county is suitable for cultivation and has been improved, that the volume of its pi eductions is sufficient to bring competitive markets to the doors of the farmer, who rear s the benefits which result from having his products sought rather than having to beseech an unwilling market to take them. This part of the countv extends from the Wil lamette river back 'into the foot hills of the Cascade mountains, and includes as choice farming lands as can be found anywhere. From these farms vast quantities of grain and fruit flow to market over the various lines of transpor tation, and the situation of Albany makes it the general market place for these products. The sheep and cattle ranges on the hills of the eastern part of the county send their productions, with the timber and mineral yield, to swell the volume which is competed for in the market of Albany. Thus the people of city and country do not have to make bricks without straw in building up extensive commer cial interests. Between the foothills of the mountains and the Willamette river the country never was heav ily timbered. There are groves of timber but no dense forests. The soil is rich and well watered, and it was a comparatively easy matter to establish paying farms in such a country. The -aising of grain commenced in the early dav, has continued, but with the develop ment of good markets and means of reaching them other crops were made profitable, and the diversity of products has continued to in crease, until now the fruit, h ips, flax, hay and root crops, poultry, wool, dairy and live stock interests are quite extensive. The farmers do not merely dabble in these things, but prosecute their culture with a vigor that is productive of telling results. The acreage of wheat cultivated is probably larger than the area devoted to any other one crop. Oats and barley" follow and hay, hops and flax are by no ' means inconsidera Die. The culture of hops is constantly increasing, and flax only needs the stimula tion of manufactories to spring into prominence. In somg cases flax culture has been demonstrated to be more profitable than raisin k;7 grain. At present the only object is the seed, but there appears to be no good reason why the fiber should not be worked into fabrics that would further increase the profits of the industry. The fruits of Linn count- are of the same general character as flourish in most parts of the AVillamette val lev, and considerable attention is i given to their cultivation. This is another of the productions that is rapidly increasing in importance. The poultry business, as in most localities of the West., is partic ularly profitable in this country. because of the good markets at hand. A good hen is almost as profitable to the farmer as a sheep, i The dairv business and wool raising is obtaining special atten tion in Linn county, from the fact that they interest every farmer, and should be made important features in the output of the man ufactured products of the county. Dairying offers special induce ments here in the cheapness and abundance oi milk procurable and HAVE YOU M See ant will give you first class goods for your money and sell the high prices which the market olfers for the manufactured arti cles. It would be diriicuit indeed to find a location combining more of the essentials for the success ful prosecution of this industry than exist in Linn county, Oregon. A portion oi the wool crop is now consume) 1 by the woolen mills at Brownsville, but there is yet a wide field tor inaniuacturing tnis line of goods, for the woo! produc tion of Oregon is huge and the quality unexcelled. In the natural timbers of the count- Linn has a resource that is uf permanent value. The lumber ing interets are not so prominent as in some other sections of the Pacific slope, but the eastern patt of the county has a large supply ol lir, pine, spruce, oak, ash, maple, abler, etc., that will be available for many years. These could best Oe utilized m the manufacture of furniture. The streams which flow irotn the mountains furnish means for transporting timber as well as tiie power for operating mills. The chief mineral products are gold, lire clay, building stone and cement. With this brief glance at the principal resources oi Linn county, some idea may be formed as to the advantages wiiich back the thriv ing city of Albany. When it is stated that the two banking houses have deposits exceeding $300,000, it may be interred that there is no popular financial stringency to op press business. The municipal improvements this season show that Albany is rapidly growing, and the public spirit of its citizens must attract enterprise and capital irom abroad. The exceptional transportation facilities the city en joys are being increased by the ex tension of the Oregon Pacific east ward. West Shore. m:li.ik k iomim;. W. II. Holloway, representing the Chas. Maubury and Nellie Boyd Co., is in the city arranging lor the appearance of that excel lent company here on Saturday, October 9. The San Francisco Chronicle in speaking of the play "His Natural Life," which will be presented at the Albany opera house on th above date, says : The novel of "His Natural Life" was a very strong and interesting one, crowded with well drajrn c haracters and flooded with inci dents. Inigo Tyrrell has taken it and in spite oi tiie difficulties such a condition of affairs presents for dramatization, has evolved a high ly meritorious play, which has been delighting the audiences at the Alcazar during the week. Some few defects in the- initial represen tation were subsequently corrected with the most gratifying results. 'His Natural Life" is eminently a pictorial play witri the strongest kind oi human interest. Its first distinctive feature was the splen did manner in which it lias been staged. Heavy set after heavy set follow quick upon each other and .- all are most elaborate and beauti ful. The manner in which the drama is acted could hardly have been improved upon in this city. The caste is an elaborate one, tak ing in many people, not one of whom could be found fault with. Chas. C. Maubury is a fine, manly I actor. Hearty and warm blooded ! in his style and yet not given to i overacting. Inigo Tyrrell, who is an actor as well as an author, has an easy, light pleasant style which can rise to exhibition of nicely considered passion at tsmes. The ot'ier characters were most competent hands, and the play was a great success. Smallpox Scare Near Salem. The board of directors of the Keizer school, four miles north of Salem, have dismissed school on account of the smallpox scare. One of the patients who, the other day, was attacked near Sheridan last Friday David and Saturday night at Ouerson s, and he coin- plained at the time of not feeling well. It is feared others have been exposed. A fatal Feud. George Bewley, an old pioneer resident of McMinnville, was shot and killed near Sheridan Wednes day by Wm. McKune. Readers of the IIekai.d are aware of the fact that active steps are being made towards building a line of railroad from Astoria to Albany. Articles oi incorporation have been filed bv M. J. Kinnev, W. W. Parker, E. A. Noyes, M. C Crosby. II. B. Parker, James Taylor and J. V. Conn as incor "oratois. It is the intention of this company to build the road from Astoria to the head of Tilla mook bay, and possibly to Fort. Stevens. Several days ago the citizens of Tillamook held a meet ing and accepted the proposition of Mr. Cass and a wealthy Chicago syndicate to build a road froih Al bany to connect with the Astoria Coast railroad at that place. From Albany to Portland it is l'l miles east and t2 north ; Port land to Astoria it is 4S miles north and 58 west. On the above pro posed route Albany to Astoria, via. Tillamook it. is 24 miles west and 110 mil is north, showing a balance in favor of that road as to distance of 42 miles, and the greater part of the distance it is comparatively level. Work upon the tira ling will commence this fall, and next year will probably see the greater part of the work completed. When this road is built Albany will be preminently above all oilier Ore gon cities as a railroad center. Hop House Unriieil. Information was received in this city yesterday that the hop house of Dr. II. A. Davis, at Harrisburg, burned to the ground yesterday morning. The house was filled with hops which had been dried. About 9 o'clock the building caught fire and gained such head way that it was totally destroyed. The loss will probably be several thousand dollars. As near as could be learned there was no insurance. A Boy I'oHVii-tfri of Murder. The trial of the boy John Mc Alister for the murder of his father Lift Julv commenced on Monday i 1 1 .jacKsonviue ana ended last Satur day, resulting in a verdict of mur der in the second degree. During the trial he seemed to take but lit tle interest in what was going on, and appeared incapable to com prehend the important bearing it had to him. Arrested for Libel. II. 0. Rosenfield, editor of the Sunday Mercury, has been arrested for libel on a charge preferred bv Dr. J. C. Gilbert, of Salem. He was held in $500 bonds to await the action of the grand jury. . Arms for I he Militia. Representative Hermann's bill for the relief of the militia of Ore gon has been passed.
