The very satisfactory prospects that have been shown by the ad vance of wheat in the Chicago market, for the first time in five years, to one dollar per bushel, brings out many comments. Per haps the Chronicle hits the sub ject very fairly when it says that it believes that this advance is not Trifrf v iwi'mIm ti vt as manv changes in the price of wheat have been, but that is based on the universal law of supply and de mand, or in other words, the normal relation between produc tion and consumption has been restored. As ,is well known, the west went so extensively into "wheat raising a few years ag that it produced more .vheat than could be readily marketed, and the in evitable consequence was a fall in price. But more recently the wneat growing area has dimin ished, while the wheat consumers in the United4States have increased in number; and so the price ot wheat has advanced, and now reaches $1 per bushel. The Western farmer has not "been idle because he has not been growing wheat. He has put his land to other uses, and has raised such products as are available to .supply the best of all markets, the home market. There has been a steady increase in the acreage of oats, barley, corn, rye, hay, po tatoes, etc., besides tracts of land, great and small, converted into orchards aud gardens, and in this Amend your laws was anciently a pertinent remark. At the pre sent time that remark is in a meat measure obsolete. practically speaking, for the laws in their in tent and purposes are good. Put as Friend savs, the one crying need of the times is equality in the administration of the law. There is a great deal of talk about legal equality and with a few excep tions like the conspiracy laws the law themselves read so as to bear equally on all, but when it comes to the execution it is quite a different thing. There is one ad ministration for one'class, and still another, widely different for vast corporations. It is idle to deny this ; everybody knows it and con cealment of the fact deceives no one.
