The medical fraternity are de ciding, by research and observa tion, that intermitting fevers owe there existence to atmospheric agencies, and bacteria taken from the atmosphere into the human system. Dr. Baker, in a paper read to the American Medical A: -sociation says : Intermittent fever is proportional, directly or inversely, to the average daily range of atmqspheric temperature. The controlling cause of intermittent feven is exposure to insidious changes in the atmospheric tem perature. In the mechanism of the causation of intermittent fever j the chief factor is the delav in the i ... i reaction to exposure to cool air. This delay, extending to a time when greater heat los should oc cur, results in the abnormal accumulation of heat in the interior of the body and in disturbed ner vous action the chill; and the final reaction is excessive, because of the accumulation of heat, and sometimes because it occurs at the warmest part of the day. The fever is the excessive reaction from the insidious influence of the ex posure to cool air, and it is periodi cal because of the periodicity of nervous action, and because the exposure and the consequent chill are periodical, owing to the absence of the warmth from the sun at night. Residence in valleys or on lowlands through which or upon which cold air flows at night, and thus causes insidious changes in the atmospderic temperature, favors intermittent fever. In our climate those measurers, such as drainage, which enable the soil to retain warmth during the night, and thus reduce the daily range of temperature immediately over aucli soil, tend to decrease inter mittent fever among residents thereon. In the cure and pro phylaxis of intermittent fever those remedies are useful which lessen torpidity (especially of the liver) and tend to increase the power of the body to react promptly to in sidious changes in atmospheric temperature. Dr. Bell to the same association presented a paper upon the same subject in which he takes the round that malaria is coincident with accumulations of organic matter in process of putrefaction in alluvial bottoms, on the margins of sluggish slreams, low humid borders of stagnant ponds and . iakjes, the marshy borders of the seashore, and circumscribed local conditions, chiefly artificial, com prehending more or less the same Mrs. Kate Un ask praofk, is about to trive to the reading world a volume of her recollections. They will undoubtedly he interest ing and well worth reading, both as reininiscenses and history, for she was intimately connected with the actors iu our most interesting historical epoch and will probably give much of the stirring episodes of that dav. ;9 I A l. He is a veteran soldier who wore the gray during the rebellion. The excursion to Columbus, Ohio, to the Grand Army Encamp ment, gives a great chance to those going east to travel the route in first class style and at low rates.
