When they attain their growth this fall they will be tesUd by Mr. Spreckles' direction, and if they prove to possess the necessary qualities for making sugar, and the conditions here are deemed favorable for this enterprise it may lead to a profita ble industry here. Mr. Spreckles is experimenting in sugar beet raising in different portions of the country, and if he should inaugurate a big business like this here we might overlook some of the evils of his sugar monopoly. At Waterloo. Mr. J. G. Gross, proprietor of the popular hotel at Waterloo was in the citv yesterday. Actiey, who was ill charge of the partv of teachers, and several other gentlemen ot the tv desired a Herald reporter to express their appreciation of the 0,.,.asion. a temporary platform t,y the side ot the depot buildm was improvised for a fruit stand, was completely loaded down with quantities of plums, peaches, ap ples, crabapples, cabbage, pie plant, corn, wheat, etc. The fruit was in quantities to furnish the party with a taste as well as a sight of ttie unequalled produc tion of this celebrated A'illamette valley, and blackberries by the crate, all of which were loaded into the teachers' hands not a smail share of it going directly to mouths and on board of the train for the delectation of the teachers on their wav. They all seenvd perfectly delighted, and one lady i teacher filled her arms with truit, several hoquets of flowers that were presented to her, a head of cabbage and a bunch of pie plant that Superintendent McEiroy had piled on top, and was so encum bered that she found it impossible to get on hoard the train before it starred, and Conductor Conser had to halt the train and wait for her, was so short fiat not many could be interviewed, but Messrs.
