NOT RELEVANT. :S) i A siinnnsed (?i corresnondent of the Evening Damocrat attempts to use an application upon the senior I editor of the Herald, that is some- j what akin tn what, is denominated ! blackmail. This correspondent eays "the editor of the Herald is willing to sacrifice the interest, welfare and usefulness of the order of Patrons of Husbandry to sub serve his partisan interests." We say a supposed correspondent, and i as possible by voting for the power with cause for so doing, for nojthat placed him there, we most person who can truthfully sign j emphatically object to any "Old himselg "Granger" as the article referred to is signed would make a statement so unqualfiedly false, so maliciously misleading and so dispicably mean. Every Patron in the jurisdiction knows that the active effort of the senior editor has been to keep partisanship entirely out of the grange. As to using the influence of the Patrons of Hus bandry for any purpose whatever outside of the benefit of the order itself, we never have, for two very ! good reasons. First, as far as we j tuat he choose, he may even corn are personally concerned, we j mand the veto o the dependent would not if we could, and every ! pe'11011 bill, the bill especially member of the order that knows ' Prepared to relieve the old soldiers us knows that fact. Secondly, we j could not if we would, and no ! member could, a fact that has ! 1 been satisfactorily demonstrated many times over. We are certainly at a loss to con cieve what special reason there could be for the claim that our being a member of the muchly abused order of Patrons of Hus bandry should handicap the edi torial matter that we mav prepare for our paper. We can see no more reason for any connection in ii a j : t : . i ii i. ..11 I, ., iiiau uirccwou man iiieie miuuiu uv with the Ancient Free and Ac cented Masons, with which we also Wth. hnnnr tn h cnnnPCtP,! . or ! anv other organization to which i ir,,.,,J firm is a member of the Albany Board of Trade, but that organiza tion does not own the Herald's j editorial columns, as a sequence of J SUCh membership, neither does the ; freely outspoken facts and deduc- tions of our editorial matter dam age the interests of that or ny other organization to which we may be united. The real facts of the case are that the writer of the article re ferred to seeks, by means both unfair and dishonest, to create sentiment in favor of his own blindly adhered to opinions. His partisanship is so strong that he cannot distinguish free trade in the fact that the products of Oregon are placed upon ie free list, but maintains that protection is main tained because the products of the almost single state of Louisiana sugar is still kept at a hign tariff; and the manufactured woolen goods we wear is given the benefit of protection, but the Oregon pro ducer of the raw material is left to the mercy of the competition of the whole outside world. He also drops back upon the stale and hackneyed falsehood of ;"free whisky and free tobacco." jThis pseudo "Granger" knows, if Hie is capable of connecting two intelligent consecutive thoughts together, that the abolition of the whisky revenue tax will not con duce towards free whisky in the least, but on the contra ry will work in the opposite direction. The best thinkers and workers in the temierance cause have universally so argued the question and con vincingly too. As far as tobacco is concerned, if the removal of the direct tax under the revenue law will put money into the pockets of the farmers of the majority of thf states of the union who are en gaged in the cultivation of the plant, and there is no denying the fact that it will, then we emphatic ally s.iy remove it. We are not in favor of :i direct war tax in times oi peace. .-penally when an ovcr- iijwi tlaivj y tnCnry is claimed to en r the welfare of the country; ;s ov.r pseudo "Granger" is. To thk Eostor of the Hkrald: In a recent number of the Evening Democrat appears a com munication signed ' An Old Sol dier," which commends the action of President Cleveland in the pen sion matters, and especially the vetoing of the dependent pension bill. This "Old Soldier" says that the dependent pension bill "would nave given every dhk. Hanger on and camp follower who was in any way connected with the service without rendering any, an oppor tunity to swear he is unable toi ! earn a living, ana tnus become a j blo(xl Sucker on the body politic Xo', vvhile we accord eveiy person the right to regalate his voting to suit himsell, and think it quite natural if any "Old Soldier" has become accustomed to drawing the "pap" from the "public teat," in a "Nasbyite" method, that he should decide to continue the prospects of that "pap" as much isoiUier' or any individual referring, no matter what their present or past condition may be or has been, to the widows and orphans or relatives of dead soldiers as "bilks, hangers on, camp follow ers," and such like choice billings gate. "Old Soldiex" can cultivate all the admiration for President Cleveland's numerous vetoes of pension bills, setting up his judg ment against the combined re- ! search and wisdom of "tJ'irc" anu "isuom oi congress, of the country from the tax that 11413 neen ievieu uPon Uieni as members ol the grand army of the I. 1 - i i r i . epuoc, a a cnamy iuna to sup port the t eserving indigent soldieis and their dependent relatives and the widows and orphans of de serving soldiers, but which Presi dent Cleveland decided the old soldiers could better continue to pay than could the government that is governing under the enor mous treasury surplus.
