To any town or city the question off a supply of pure water, for culinary and drinking purposes, is an important and serious one. The health and prosperity of its citizens depends upon the purity of such supply, and when it is brought, as ii almost invariably is, by a sys tem ofjjwater works, the fountain Lead should be carefully gua-dtSl i ' anu every person wno puts a cup of it lift his lips should ' know "whence and whither it comes Hew York city has always boasted of the puritv of the Croton water supply, but recently a physician, who has been investigating, com pletely destroys confidence in the purity of that source. According to his statement the sewage cre ated by 25,000 people, the largest miik factory in the world, 10,000 cows, 1200 horses, 1500 nogs, and 40 factories, was all being run into that body of water from which the city of New York draws its water , supply. While in former years the Thames water used by London contained five times as much bac teria ap Croton water, recent in vestigation showed that in one cubic centimeter New York con tained 526 bacteria, against 44 contained by London water. While, of course, the greater part of these were the common, harm less bacteria, still there was a large proportion capable of pro ducing disease ; and he expressed the opinion that a great Vleal of the scarlet fever, diphtheria, and other infectious diseases which prevailed in New York might be traceable to germs derived from the water supply. Every other city in the country, whether large or small, should look after this important matter. It is too important to be neglected. The old saying that those wlio live in glass houses, etc., may yet haveja literal application, for the manufacture of that article is so extending its bounds that glass houses may not be an unlooked for sequence of future experiments. It is already said that although glass pipes of large diameter have not as yet been successfully pro duced, the opinion has been ex pressed by those engaged in the manufacture of glass on a large scale that the time is not far dis tant when some method of casting such pipes satisfactorily and cheap ly will be devised ; and it is be lieyed that made in similar form to the present cast-iron pipes, with some suitable mechanism , for a jotnt, and of malleable glass, a water p ipe would thus be formed to whi :h there could scarcely be an objection. Strong, tough, smooth and indestructible, and made f a material that is found almost anywhere, it is thought not improbable that, in time, when ever a large quantity of pipe i3 re quired in any one locality, a furnace will be erected and the pipes be there made. Contributed by the W. C. T. U. A mothers' meeting will be held at the home of Mis. Baltimore on next Tuesday afternoon. Subject to be discussed, "How to secure truthfulness in childien." All ladies are invited and urged to attend. There was reported at the last annual national convention of the W. C. T. V. G505 unions and 2235 loyal temperance legions. Their total membership is 237,;!G. Twenty-five states have scientific temperance instruction. Amoun: of money contributed for local work, $o30,925; raised by state unions, $34,885; money paid to the national, $10,757. The most frightful effects of the drink habit are not those which can be tabulated in statistics. It is not the waste of grain, nor the destruction of property, nor the increase of taxes, nor even the ruin of physical health, nor the loss of life which most impresses the mind of the thoughtful ob server of inebriety. It is the effect of this vice upon the character of men, as it is exhibited to him day by day in his ordinary intercourse with them. It is in the spiritual realm that the ravages of Strom: drink are most terrible. Body and mind are so closely related that when the one suffers tie other must share the suffering; and the injury to the physical health resulting from intemperate drinking must, therefore, be ac companied by similar injury of the mental and moral powers. Bi t the inclination of the popular thought is so strongly toward the investigation of physical effects that the spiritual consequences of drunkenness are often overlooked. Degeneration of tissue is more palpable than degeneracy of spirit ; .a lesion of ihe brain more startling than a breach of faith ; but the deeper fact, of which the senses take no note, is the more important fact ; and it would be ell if the attention of men could be tixed upon it. Moderate drink ing is often defended by reputable gentlemen to whom the very thought of a debauch would be shocking. To such we might truthfully say : It is true you are not drunkards, but day by day, and little by little, you are weak ening your mental faculties and losing the mastery over yourselves, and if you could but know what is too evident to those who love you best, how your character is slowly losing the firmness of its texture and the firmness of its outline.how plainly visible are the signs of moral decay in your character, you would not think your daiiy indul gence harmless in its tendency.
