Il'llt-tl! i ill 111 tVir il monument to adorn one of its parks and to perpetuate the name of the man who cho.se the city as Ids SUSPICIOUS NATURES. Perhaps one of the unhappiet ' dispositions is one that is always ii suspicious, always looking out for affronts or suppositious wrongs from others. A writer defines a suspicion as being in its first for mation but a fear, a doubt, an un certainty in the mind, based upon more or less reasonable ground. A man, for example, suspects some one in his employ of unfaithful- jiess. (He may have strong cause ) for the suspicion, or there may be but slight foundation, or it may be entirely a figment of the imagina tion. In any case, he perhaps can not avoid, in the first instance, the entrance of the suspicion into his own mind, and it may ba well that he can not. His own interest and the cause of justice might othe. wise both suffer. Being there, however, the question immedi ; utely arises, what shall he do with Jit? There are three paths open to home must be taken as an unpai a'led specimen of niggardliness. The scheme to have the republi can political clubs contribute to the work will not be a success. The sentiment of the country was overwhelmingly in favor of a mon ument to Grant at Washington, and the required amount could have been raised with ease for a ' memorial at the national capital. But if New York wants a monu ment she will have to pay for .t herself." An exchange relates the follow ing: "At the international cor gress of anthropology in New York last week, the st ;;tiing assertion was made that fully one-half the inebriates have had this fatal it -heritence handed down to them. A clear understanding "f the awful consequences of tins immutab.'e law should give a new inspiration to the caue of m jrality, and im press parents with a higher sen e of t leir resp.msibilties." There is no other accounting for the low price uf wool in Oieun this year than the agitation of the Mills bill, which proposes to put wool on the free list. Messrs. Will & Stark have re- him, and to everv one who sus-1 carved a hne lot t goici-neacie-l ; ca les, nne silverware, t;oiu waivnes .tml chains, etc., wlmu iin-y offering at very low prices. Ca 1 P pects another of wrong-doing. He may test the suspicion, he may quench it, or he may cherish and retain it. The last of these meth ods is the most com me.i, and this it is which works so much evil and gradually develops the suspicious disposition. To retain the sus. picion, to let it rankle in the mind, even silently, is both unjust and unwise; and when to this we aid the very common habit of confin ing these unprovoked doubts and fears to a third party, the injury s multiplied. There are many sus- icions that need crushing in the &.-We fancy our friend is cool o us; we imagine some one has slighted ns ; we suspect our neigh bor of having spoken ill of us. IVIost likely we are mistaken, and, in any case, we could never profit ably search into the matter. Circumstances may tend ' to cast suspicion on one whom we horfor; let us continue to trust him in oiir heart of heart. We may fear that some one has committed a fault which, .however does not concern us in the least, and in which we are not called upon to interfere; let us expel the idea as an umrelcome intruder. In one of these two ways every suspicion may be rightly dealt with. If a-s u warning it has a mission u per form, it will do its work ; if it is an unworthy or an idle conjecture, it wi-1 be dismissed. In either case it will pass away, as all suspicions ( are meant to do.
