Brownsville, May 30. Next Monday you will be called upon to cast your ballot for state officers, and among the many names in nomination for those offices there is one to which I wish to call the attention of every labor ing man in the county, irrespective of party or politics. That man is W. II. Kirk, of Brownsville, the republican nominee for the assem bly. I have known Mr. Kirk for the past eight years, and a stancher friend to the laboring man cannot be found in Oregon. If you should meet a stranger on our streets without, money, em ployment or friends, and not knowing where the next meal is to come from, you will always hear him inquiring for "V. II. Kirk. "No laboring man has ever left his door empty-handed, and the widows and orphans have always found him "a friend in need." In this age of greed and selfishness the laboring man finds but few friends among the well-to-do classes, and when he does find one who lias stood by him in all kinds of weather and earnestly tried to better his condition and lighten his labors, it is the duty of every laboring man to recognize the fact .and t give due credit for the same, j .'And now, fellow laborers, in the name of justice and fairness, I earnestly appeal to you, irre spective of party politics or polit ical views, to send W. R. Kirk to the assembly as a just tribute to '. his open-hearted generosity ' many acts of kindness to '. laboring man. M. F. and the The San Francisco Chronicle says : "The free traders have tried all they knew to present Cleveland with the sheep-raiser's head on a platter, but Oregon has declined to surrender its leading industry at their demand, and now they affect to be indifferent to the result of the coming election, and even claim that Representative Her mann will be elected on account of j his personal popularity only. Biager Hermann has earned his re-election not merely becanse he ) has been attentive to the needs of his immediate constituents, but because he has looked out well and faithfully for the interests of the whole Pacific coast. He has been one of the most valuable members of the Pacific coast delegation, and is deservedly popular, and his re election cannot be minimized by attributing it solely to his personal popularity." One of the most important offi- j ces to fill in the county is that of J county school superintendent. For j it we need a man of experience in the school room, and a man of executive and organizing ability. Pre-eminently fitted for that place by every qualification called for is J. M. Williams. He has been a successful worker in the school room for years, and adds to this essential qualification that of being thoroughly qualified by education and application, and pessessed of sound judgment and executive ability to successfully conduct the affairs of the office. Mr. Williams should receive the necessary ma jority vote to make him superin tendent. If the people of Linn county want a man for sheriff who is a ' thoroughly competent business man and one of the county's solid financiers, they will vote for John Conser. He has proven his qual ifications in the management of his own business, and will make one of the best sheriffs Linn county has ever had. Do not fail to see that his name is on your ticket, if you want a man of un imueaclied integrity, for this is more thai Smallman. can be said of Mr. Vote for John Censer for sheriff ias been estimated that there j are now 80,000 salesmen on the road in this country, and that tla-ir expense account alone averages $1,625 a year each. This means an outlay of $130,000,000 a year, and, counting an average salary of $1,000 per year, the grand total is swelled to $210,000,000 expended by and on traveling salesmen. This immense sum is scattered throughout the entire country, and furnishes an important item of railway and hotel profits. The people of Oregon, if they know what is for their own good, will retain Hon. W. P. Lord on the S ipreme bench. It would not be wise to elect John Burnett and make the bench entirelv demo cratic, for fear of one-sided opin ions. Democrats will see the force of this as well as republicans. Voters, look out for jobs Stories told and letters and circu i i . . i iars sent, our. on ttie eve oi eie -tion should be regarded with suspicion, and should receive no GSnsideration. They sifnply mean campaign jobs! Oxe duty voters owe to the county in which they live : that is after comparing each ticket care fully, to vote for the best men. John Conser is one of Linn county's best financiers and busi ness men. Vote for him for sheriff. Look day! out for jobs on election POLITICAL I-OINTEKS. The next republican national convention will be composed of 820 delegates making 411 necessary for a choice. All voters should take notice that the law requires theni to vole in their own precinct if they vote for county officers. Don't make any mistakes about it . There" are 50000.000 pounds of Australian wool lying in Boston Harbor waiting the passage of the Mills bill, to sell at Sets a pound. Wool men take notice. i The Amalgated Association of Iron and Steelworkers. the most powerful labor organization of New York, has joined the tariff league. Ttiis begins to sliow which way the drilt of intelligent opinion among workiDg men is taking. The statement made in some of his speeches by Col. Irish that Gresham was a free tinder and Vited for Tilden is indignantly denied in every particular and is kciowntobe untrue not onlj by his friends in toe East but by many in this state as well. Judge Deady has upon the uetit jion of several citizens of Portland. appointed supervisors under au thority of the United States, to at tend and see that 11 frauds and corruptions at the ballot box at the June election is avoided or punish ed. This is as it should be and the howls of the corruptionists who wish to hold the sack or commit other irregularities should not have any influence whatever. BIARKIED. YGUXG -CLARK.
