There also resides there Miss Fannie Oopeland, a young lady about 20 years 01 age. Mr. Gilmore monkeyed with Fannie's affections, and under promise of marriage, so it is al leged, he seducud her. The young lady employed Lark iiilyeu and J . J. Walton." Jr., of Eugene City, and instituted a damage suit for breach of promise against Gilmore, dicing the vaiue f her disap pointed hopes at $5000. Mr. Gil more employed Washburne & Woodcock and George Dorris. of Eugene City, to defend him. The case was duly tried, and tne jury on Monday "brought in a verdict for the plaintiff for $2500 damages. Tlien the grand jury brought in an indictment against Mr. Gilmore for seduction, and he was accordingly arrested on this charge, and will answer to it at the next term of the circuit court at Eu e ie being . under bonds fur his appearance then. For his mistake in fooling with the buzz-saw of Miss Cope land's heart Mr. Gilmore wi'.l lose all his property, and besides he stands a fair show of learning to make stoves in the large foundry in connection with the state peniten tiary in the eastern suburbs of the -capital city. Salem Statesman. Not aa (Mllce Seeker. Hon John Burnett, democratic nominee for supreme judge.resented being called an "omce seeker' by the Oorvallis Gazette, whereupon that paper made apology as fol lows: "We were mistaken; it is the office that has been seeking you, as the following will show: In 1862, if we are rightly informed, you ran for state senator against A. G. Hovey and was defeated ; in 18(54 you ran for district attorney atraiust J. F. Waston and was de feated : in 1S66 vou ran for county judge against T. Bent Odeneal and was defeated ; in 1868 you ran for presidential elector on the Sey mour and Blair ticket, and was defeated; in 1870 you ran for county judge aguinst A. G. Mulkey and was elected; in 1872, while acting as county judge, you ran tor congress against Hoc. J. G. Wilson and was defeated ; in 1874 you ran indeDendent for supreme judge against Mosier and Kelsay and was elected ; in 1876 vou ran iu the democratic state convention for supreme judge and was defeated by J. M. Thompson; in 1878 you ran lor state senator against James Chambers and was elected; in 1880 you ran for supreme judge with Prim and KeMy, and you were all three defeated by what was called the boys' ticket, Lord, Watson and Waldo; in 1882 you were appointed supreme judge by Gov. Thayer ; in 1886 you ran in the democratic convention for gov ernor and was defeated, bat ac ceiited the nomination tor district judge and was defeated bv Hon. Ii. S. Bean ; and in 1888 you are a candidate for suoreme judge. So it appears that office has been seeking you for a long time. It has not alwavs found vou, but it has been after vou all the same In fact, it has been hunting you j every election for the last twenty six years, except one, viz. : 1884, and it is possible that the measles frightened it away that year." Readers 01 the Herald will re member that abou'. three weeks ago a scrub named Ben Wilski, a Portland hack- driver, was ' com pelled to marry Miss Arnelt, of Lebanon, at the Revere house in this city to save himself from the penitentiary. A Portland exchange says: -The very next day after the wedding Wilski brought his 17-vear-old wife a poor country raised child to this city, and im mediately installed her in a house of prostitution on Third street to make inonev for him. She was kept there until last week, when spying Officer Emig passing by sne cried out to him to come to her assistance and release her from her horrible prison, lhe young wife was kindly taken in hand by the officer, rescued from her living tomb, and taken to the city tail The next morning she was brought before the chief of police, and with sobbing voice told the above terrible story of her husband' brutal depravity and her own hor rible fate. She begged piteously to be sent home to her parents. and the generous chief gave her $5 with which to take her there, and then saw the broken hearted child safely on the train bound for a home where n tuture sne win hardly raise her head. What a terrible experience has been tnis girl's within a short space of three weeks, and all the work of a des picable Portland loafer, who does not have to suffer a particle, unless he has a conscience, which is very doubtful, judging from his brutal behavior." LAD I ES TEACHERS' INSTITUTE. verUd Through itm ai. There is a rumor afloat that it is the intention of the Southern Pa cific railroad company to put on between San Francisco and Port land another daily overland train ithat will make the run in less than thirty hours. The time of start ing from Portland will be some time in the morning, before the present Eugene express, and stops will only be made at the principal : stations. This will include, in the valley, Salem, Albany, Eugene, and probably Oregon City. The train will be a flyer, and will be pulled by the most powerful coal : burning engines. The time of starting from San Francisco will be about the same as that from Port land, and the existing schedule will not be affected. It is said the mew trains would be put on sooner, if the Southern Pacific were not mbarrassed by want of engines. Rig Wheat Crops- A Colorado farmer, who has an idea or two in his head above the common, tells how he manages to harvest crops of wheat that aver age forty bushel to the acre. He has a farm of onby 100 acres. Eighty acres of this are seeded to alfalfa. fnra which he cuts hay enough to keep a good-sized band of sheep in fine condition the year round He has a portable corral made which incloses about an acre of land. This he sets upon the land to be sown to wheat, and confines the sheep therein for two or three days, hauling the alfalfa and feeding it to them. The cor ral is moved about the field until it is all gone over. By this time the ground has become pretty well covered with sheep droppings, and it is then in condition to plow. As a result of the pasturing of the sheep, crops of wheat are regularly harvested which average forty bushels and upward to the acre. A quarter section of land treated in this manner can be and has been made to pay a net profit of over $2000 s year. For plain farm ing this may fairly be considered as "doing quite well." ' Butter Making. It would be to the interpst of our dairymen to make some effort at an improvement in butter making. It is not intimated, of course, that good butter is not made in this section, but there are many who place on the market a poorer quality of butter than should be made. There is no reason other than neglect or ignorance, why the best butter in the State should not be manufactured here, lhe climate here, feed and water are all that could be asked for. It onlv remains for those in the busi nes's to perfect themselves in their vocation. Cleanliness in milking as well as in the dairy-house, ia absolutely necessary to make but terthat will command a good price. Poor butter makers hurt the reputation of the community, in resrard to that business, although the same community may contain some of the best dairyman in the State. Oftentimes have we heard customers in a store say : "Whose make of butter have you? Well I don't want that. If you have some of Smith's or Jone's make. I want it." Greenville Bulletin. Removed. Wm. . Simpson has removed his stock of tinware. hardware and notions into the old Shane & Lonswav store, where he will keep up the full stock ol gooas, ana maiataras tne pop ular fixed price counter arrangements be had adopted at his old stand. He will continue the sale of the Shane & Lonsway bankrupt stock at cost.
