The distinguished-gentleman is a veteran in legislation, having served nearly thirty two consecutive years in Congress, and that he has lost none of the ability for which he lias been famous for many years w as full' proven by the able speech which he deliver ed last Wednesday on the tariff. Mr. Morrill has been a member of the Senate continuously for 21 years, one month and ten days, and no member of that distin guished body enjoys the confidence of the peopl" ami of his colleagues to a trreater extent than he. The Hous-j committee on invalid pensions have amended the de pendent pension bill entirely out of its original shape. But it mat ters little what they do with it in committee, as the democrats of the House have fully decided that it'shi.ll not pass that body until next session, and then tliey de pend on Cleveland to veto it. As the election will be over by that time he will probablv not dis- 1 appoint them. Another presidential candidate is out of the field. Mr. Chauncey Depew of New York lias stated ooniiively that he is notacandi- i. late, and th.at he does not want the nomination, lie is for Blaine, who he believes possesses ele ments of strength not found in any other candidate. That Mr. Depew's belief is shared by the masses of the republican party is a question that does not admit of a. uoubt. Mr. Blaine's family physician in this citv states that when Mr. Blaine left here his health was perfect. Senator Hale had a let ,cr from his brother w ho is travel ing abroad now in which the latter saitl he had just spent four or live, days with the Blaine family in ltaiy,and that Mr. Blaine was looking splendidly and was in tins iit'f of srtirits. ."till these facts will not prevent the publication of sensational stories to the effect that Mr. Blaine is about to die from some dread disease or other. The latest demand of the Soutli ern democrats the nomination of Gen. Firzhugh Lee of Virginia for Vice-President, tiiis year has created a regular panic' among Cleveland's friends. They are moving heaven and earth to con vince the rioutheniers that it will mean sure defeat to grant their demand. So far they persist in the dema iil, s tying that they are expected to furnish lo3 of the electoral votes and they are enti tled to name part, of the ticket. What the result will be is not ap parent, but it is probable that tlie Southerners will compromise and take lavish promises of patronage under the next administration, in lieu of the nomination for Vice President. The Mills tariff bill will be taken mo by the House to-morrow and is likely to monopolize the attention of the House, w ith the exception of the time devoted to regular ap propriation bills, for Ihe remain der of the session. What its final fate will beno man can tell at this time, but judging from present ap- pearances it will be defeated. It' will have served a good turn after all however, for the hundred or so speeches that will be made over it,, will furnish the voters of the country much valuable information on the tariff question. The abject surrender made by a majority of the democratic mem bers of the House to the filibust ering minority in the caucus last Wednesday night, has been the source of much an u ement among the republicans. The bill to refund the direct tax to the several states, which caused the ten days dead lock, goes over until next Decem ber. This is a great victory for the Southern democrats, although there was nothing in that. They have been running the democratic party for many years, and will con tinue to do so. Hopeless.
