A tender company for Linn Eugine Co. No. 2 will be organized to-morrow. All boys between the u .res of 14 and iu uesiring to juin are requested to meet at the hall of the company at 7 i. m. By order -of the company. The fire companies" were all out for drill last evening, and the man ner in which the fire lads handled themselves showed that they have lost none of their skill, although Albany has hardly had five fires within five years. We keep the largest and best as sortment of groceries and provi sions in Albany, and sell them at reasonable rates, and that is the reason -ur store is always ciowded with shrewd buyers. AVallace & Thompson. Mr. Jonas Davis, of Shedd, re cently returned from Tacoma, where he purchased three head of Polled Angus cattle. The stock raisers of Linn county are paying more attention than evt r before to thoroughbred stock, which is a , most desirable tendency. The public will be pleased to learn that Wm. Simpson has re ceived another large invoice of goods for his 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 cent counters, liare bargains in these goods will continue at his store at Shane & Lonsway's old stand adjuining the Crawford block. Mr. J. A. Gross has returned from a trip to the Klamath hot springs in Siskiyou county, Cal., where he went for the benefit of his health. He returned much improved and reports a most en- joyahle time, ha vine lound excel lent fishing and healthful hot bath ing. He presented this office with a fine sample of salmon trout, of which he got a large number. In a recent sale of fine thorough bred trotters b' Jay Beach we notice the purchase of "Multno mah," an Altamont 2 year-old stal lion, by Barrows Bros., of Linn county. They paid for the horse , $1000 and by doing so got a fine horse.' Mr. Barrows and sons also bought of Mr. Skillman a tine Nor man stallion which weighed 1700 pounds, for which they paid about $1 per pound. These thoroughbred horses will be a valuable addition to the horse interests of Linn countv. An Optical Illusion. A remarkable instance of optical illusion occasioned by the bril liancy of the electric lights occurred in this city Saturday evening, which caused a young lady to take a chilly bath in the Beautiful Wil lamette. As a prominent young law student, accompanied bv a lady friend, were stepping out. of a skiff on to the landing at Monteith's mill, the lady, mistaking the bril liantly reflected shadow of the landing for the actual one stepped out of the boat and at once went out of sight in a considerable depth of water. The young man, posse?s ing all the presence of mind char acteristic of the legal fraternitv, immediately dived after her, and after considerable difficulty res cued her. This incident affords a very curious instance of optical illusion, and should also serve as a warning to those boating on the river in the moonlight to exercise c a e in landing when within thebril liancy of the electric lights, and the shadows of objects brightlv re flected in the water. finger Shot Off. A sixteen-year-old son of J. R. Stewart, of this city, met with a severe accident Sunday while fool ing with a giant powder cartridge. He attempted to ignite it with a match when it exploded tod took off a finder and a tuumb and lacerated his hand. Dr. Wallace amputated one of bis fingers and bandaged up his hand. The spring clip of wool will soon be sheared in Southern Oregon. Gardening is in active progress all through the Willamette valley. The snow on the mountains is rapidly disappearing. Great quantities of hay are being shipped out of the Grand Konde vallev. . From all accounts, the grain prospects for the inland empire are very flattering. The area of plowed land will undoubtedly be doubled this year, says the Arlington Times. The Astoria Pioneer devotes a olumn of space in telling the many things wmcn that town needs. Some of the large cattle ranges in Grant and Malheur counties are said to be very dry and greatly in need of rain. Nearly everv orchard in the valley is in full bloom, and prodic tions of a full crjp are plenty, says the Medtord Advertiser. Farmers in some localities in Jackson county have been com plaining that it has been too dry to start the late sown grain. According to an exchange it will require about an eight foot rise in the river to set the salmon wheels iu motion at the Cascades. Iiain is needed, but on the better portion of agricultural land crops will not sutler for some time yet without rain, .says the- East Ore gonian. According to The Dalles Times Mountaineer there are more build ings now in course of erection in that place than there was uuring the whole year of 1887. Fruit prospects still continue good, anu there will he au abun dance of everything, unless the late frosts again interiere, says the Jacksonville Times Reports from all sections of the Willamette valley this year are favorable to a big crop. There ha j just been about enough .rain to keep things growing nicely. The Ilwaco & Oyster ville railroad company, having opened the bids for construction and considered them, having rejected all bids and wil.' do the work themselves. The loggers on the Me hawk river have had bad luck in running their logs out this year. There has been no high water so that the logs could be run. About 900,000 feet were got out, leaving nearly 2,000,000 feet over for another year. Bunch Grass Blade: Mr. Hol combe, engineer of the 0. R. & N., with a star!' of assistants, arrived in Lexington on Tuesday and has begun cross-sectioning for the graders. Another party is at work near the mouth of Viliow creek. Work on the new court house at Corvallis is proceeding with ac tivity. The work of preparing the foundation has been completed and the concrete work of the foun dation is being prepared ready for the stone masons to commence their work. Mrs. A. J. Apperson met with quite an accident the other day, at McMinnville. She was returning from a neighbor's house, when she was suddenly seized with a faint ing spell and fell with considerable force on the sidewalk, bruising her face severely. A barn belonging to George Ar mitage, in Lane county, was de stroyed by tire a few "days ago. Two fine reapers were also de stroyed. The fire probably was caused by children playing about the barn. Rich gold discoveries have been made in the old Gold Hill quartz claim, which yielded a fabulous amount of gold at one time, and the claim will again be worked. A quartz crusher was received here to-day for that purpose. There is no little excitement over the discovery, as the old claim was one of the rich est ever discovered in Oregon.
