Failing, who was shol yesterdav by his wife while riding with another woman died at the hospital early this morning. It was arst thought t);e wound would not prove fatal, but his physicians dis covered he was addicted to the mor olnne habit and the severe shock hastened his death. It is obviously essential for the Baconians to set out with the as sumption that Shakespeare was an illiterate boor. They say as much as that he was so from the first and remained so to the last. He was a butcher's boy. they tell us ; he could only have been some two years at school, and so completely had his nature become "like the dyer's hand, subdued to what it (had once) worked in," that when he returned, at near fifty, to Strat ford, he lefcumed tha trade ot butcher and wool stapler. The ascertained facts of Shakespeare' life are few. There was in Strattord an excellent grammar school, to which they were certain to have sent, their son, when he reached the age, about six, at which boyn were usually entered there. To send their children to the school was within the mean of all but the poorest, which Juhn Shakespeare and Mary Arden were not ; and all that is known of them justifies the conclusion thai they would not have allowed theh son" to want any advantage com mon to boys of his class. Tlie British st amer Biela, from .Antwerp, had her bows stove and afterwards was seriously damaged in a collision off Deal in a log with the steamer Vena, from Bilboa for Kotterdam. A great many of the plantations in different parts ot the South, which were once well known for t'.ieir size, the magnificence of the residences upon them, the hospi tality oi their owners, or on account of the prominence of the families which possessed them, are now falling into ruins. The reason oi this is perhaps that the land has baen worked so long without heinj fertilized that it has become poor, or it may be that those into whose possesion it has passed lack the energy and skill which are requir ed to make it pay under the present system of labor. One of these lamotis places in Liberty county, in this state, was lately sold to "a colored man for $1,500, only part of the purchase money being re quired at once. It is known as Laurel View, and is within two miles of the historic town of Sun bury. It was the home of the gifted John Elliott and a very beautiful home it was. John El liott represented Georgia in the United States senate in 1820 to 1826. The plantation contains 5.300 acres. It was purchased during the War of secession by Linton Stevens, and was sold to the present owner by his heirs. The d strict in which the planta tion is situated was noted from the first settlement of the states until the emancipation of the slaves for the wealth and intelligence of its citizens. It is now, however, almost wholly abandoned to tlie colored people. Its great planta tions have been divided into small farms, and the superb mansions, once the homes of men noted for wealth and culture, and of women famous for beauty and refinement. are falling into decay and being replaced by cabins and huts, whose t ' i i.f .1 1 M cnimneys oi sucks ana mua ten more plainly than words the mar vellous change for tbe worse which has taken place in the once rich and prosperous district. "My guns are so much ig liter that I can fire five shots to your four and you'll find they are Oig enough if ever thev hit vou.;' "Mine will be more effective at ong range," said Carden. ".Now look heie, Carden," said Decatur, "we are both friends and I'd rather we should never fight. But all the indications point to war and if ever we do meet, I'll whip you sure." Carden smiled grimly and said ; "Bet you a thousand pounds, miby." Ho, that's more money than I ever will have," replied Decatur, but I'll just bet you a new hat." Carden . accepted the wager, laughing heartily at the time. But war was declared in tlie year ioi lowing and the United States was on cue high seas with Stephen Decatur on the quarter-deck and gore in his eye. One day she met the Macedonian and, alter a hot battle, the Britisher surrendered. When Decatur came on board, Carden extended his sword. "D n your sword" laughed Decatur. Some years ago a well-known literary man, then just out of col lege, was called upon by the agent of a new subscription book, who probably had little hope of being able to sell him a volume, but wanted to "get his band in" and test his fluency in reciting the printed prospectus with which tbe publisher had furnished all his can vassers. He had not recited more than five lines when the young gentleman interrupted him and finished the eulogy of the book as glibly as tbe agent himself had be gun it. The latter was fairly par lvzed with amazement. He had evidently to deal with a mind-read er of extraordinaiy powers and made no effort to conceal his fright. Last night about 9 :30 he again accused n r of infidelity in the presence of their two little children. She maintained her nooceuce. A violent quarrel followed, and Bergo, rushing into their bedroom, returned with a razor, and seizing bis wife by the hair, said : Nellie, I'm going to kill you." After a struggle he succeeded in tripping her ovir a footstool and and throwing ber on a sofa. He then bent her head back by tbe nair, aud putting his knee on her "beat, cut her throat from ear to ear. Bergo then bid bis children good by and cut his own throat. The screams of the children brought in the police, who took Bergo to the station, where his wound, which was found to be only an ugly cut, was dressed. x Mrs. Bergo had a high fever and frequeut hemorrhages and it is thought cannot recover.
