Silk hats promise to be generally worn by young gentlemen in M Lany this season. Reserved seats for the artistic en tertainment at the opera house, are oirsale at Blackmail's. There will not be a finer build ing front in Oregon than will be presented by L. Flinn's new brick when it is completed. CS. Savers, who was sentenced to tile penitentiary for three years for horse stealing, was taken to thepenitentiary yesterday. There has not been a vacant resHeiy-e or business house in Al bany for two years, and new 1 u idings are constantly going up. These are the best indications of a steady and healthy growth. Some fun-loving individual yes terday tied a green ribbon to the end of a Chinaman's queue and the Mongolian went around for an hour or mote before he espied the colors of the "ould soil" which he was wearing. lie then indig nantly tore it off, muttering some t h intr which was presumably a Chinese oath. The republicans of Lebanon have ori-anized a republican club. The tiifst regular meeting will be held next Friday and officers elected. This is setting a good example, which other precincts should fol low. This is the first republican rlub organized in Linn county for the coining campaign. Albany should organize the next one. Sheriff Mackay and Wayman St. 'Clair, of Corvllis, went into the country Wednesday to serve some papers, driving Mr. Mckay's fine black team. The horses were feel ,ing their oats and ran away with the buggy, not stopping for half a mile, without doing any more dam age, however, than throwing mud over the occupants of the buggy. The Albany delegation elected yesterday by the democrats, it is understood, are for Payne for clerk and Daly for sheriff. The Browns ville delegation is for Galbraith for clerk and the Lebanon delegation for Montague. The Harrisburg delegates are presumably for Doug las tor sheriff, and the ualsey del egation, or at least a part of it, for no particular candidate, unless it is to get into his back hair. The ladies of the W. C. T. U. will hold a series of prayer meet ings during the coming week, be irinning on Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock. The state president, Mrs. Kiggs, is expected to be present on Thursday and Friday afternoons, at which time she will have charge of the mpetings. It is learned that Deputy Marshal Myers has gone to berg, in Yamhill county, to U. S. New serve a warrant charging Benjamin Jaue way, father of the Spicer mail rob ber, with perjury iD connection with an indemuity bond for $500. It will be remembered that when joungJaneway was arrested and houDd over to await the action of the grand jury, Mr. J. F. Holston, a New berg farmer, was prevailed upon to furnish the required bond upon the representations of joung Janeway, and H. S. Hayworth, a son in-law. The men signed the indemnity bond, and aftewards, Mr. Holston savs, disposed of their property and assisted the culprit to escape. Hayworth also lett the country. Upon learning these facts the bondsman went to Portland und laid the matter before Dtstrict Attorney McArthur. The arrest was accoidiugly made. At tue preliminary examination belore U. '3. commissioner Lamson Mr. Janeway stated that his arrest was entirely uncalled for and that he ctu easily disprove the charge against him. He denies that his sou is hiding, and is confident that when the time comes the ac cused will appear promptly for examintion. As to the alleged statement on his part to the effect that his property was in such shape that neither tiie boudsmen nor the government could lew upon it, he I pronounced it unqualifiedly false, and said that he did not tell Mr. Holston to choose between search ing for the missing man aud losiug the forfeited nionev, and ioi hit nothing toward recapture and re ceiving only a part ot the bouded sum.
